Defrag Question on exchange server 2007
We have'nt done the defrag for the last 23 months, thats when we implemented our exchange server 2007.The database size currently is 34 GB.Question: should we need to perform offline defrag or a regular online defrag. Can any one please provide any caommands online / offline both. Please tell me which is better, this is the first time going to perform.Thank you very much for the helpful info.

Eseutil offline defragmentation should not be run as any kind of standard maintenance. Exchange runs an automatic online defragmentation nightly that handles the day-to-day maintenance of Exchange. For day-to-day, month-to-month, or year-to-year maintenance, there is no reason to run an offline defragmentation.Eseutil offline defragmentation should not be run when there is an available database to which mailboxes could be moved. Doing so will cause less downtime for end users. Because offline defragmentation is done offline, users will not have access to their mailboxes during defragmentation. For syntax and when to run and not to run offline defrag and event ID 1221, see:

I haven't defragged a database in the last nine years. You don't 'need' to defrag databases unless there's such a surplus ofwhitespace in the file that your backups and restores would benefitsignificatly from a reduction in the file size. And, even then, it's alot better to create a new database and move the mailboxes from the"big" one to the new one. Then delete the "big" one.---Rich MatheisenMCSE+I, Exchange MVP

The "online defrag" is one of several tasks that are performed(usually daily) by the Information Store -- unless you've set theschedule to "Never".Check the "General" tab on the database's propery page. Look for the"Maintenance schedule".Check your server's Application event log for events like these:Event Type: InformationEvent Source: ESEEvent Category: Online Defragmentation Event ID: 700Date: 1/13/2010Time: 12:00:00 AMUser: N/AComputer: SRVR005Description:MSExchangeIS (2488) SG01: Online defragmentation is beginning a fullpass on database 'E:\SG01\Mailbox Database.edb'.
