Deleted Items not being permanently deleted after retention period expires - Exchange 2007
I have a policy in place that is supposed to permanently delete items from the Deleted Items folder 14 days from when the item was placed in the Deleted Items folder. The problem is that the items are not being deleted from the Deleted Items folder after the 14 day period passes. As far as I can tell, I have everything set correctly. I created managed content settings for the Deleted Items folder that specify that all items will be permanently deleted 14 days after moved to the Deleted Items folder. I then created a managed folder mailbox policy that includes the Deleted Items folder and applied it to all mailboxes using an EMS script. I spot checked several mailboxes and the policy is applied. I have also set the MRM schedule. It runs every morning from 6:00-7:00. I can see in the event log that the managed folder mailbox assistant is running successfully. It always processes all of the mailboxes with none being skipped and it always finishes within the 1 hr timerame. The other thing is that if I change the managed content settings to delete 14 days after the item was delivered instead of when it was moved to the Deleted Items folder, it works fine. Everything in the Deleted Items folder that was delivered over 14 days ago are gone.

What are some other ramifications of checking that box? We are using a third-party solution for backups and I'm afraid the database will fill up if I check that box because it might not be aware of a full backup from the third-party solution.
