Hello,
We have Exchange 2003 SP2 and due to some disk space issue we moved all terminated users
mailboxes to another Exchange VM and also, we removed Exchange Attributes
too for these terminated employees and after 30 days 900+ Mailboxes got deleted
as per default deletion policy(which i changed just Now from 30 days to 365
days
Now, is it possible to recover deleted mailboxes? If yes, can you please help to share recovery
process for same?
Your suggestion will help me lot
Regards,
Swapnil

Hi
If a deleted mailbox passes the the retention period then you will only be able to recover it from a backup of the database.

So since the AD attributes are no longer in AD you cannot just recover from a backup via RSG without first recovering AD attributes as well, so in this case you might need to build a recovery system that is not connected to your production networks and
then restore AD and the Exchange backups to the recovery system. However IF you are open to using 3rd party utilities check out Lucid8's DigiScope
http://www.lucid8.com/product/digiscope.asp that provides an intuitive GUI allowing you to open offline Exchange databases (without the need for the AD accounts) so that you can Browse, Search,
and Export Mailboxes, Folders and Individual items to PST, MSG and XML or recover the desired data directly from the offline source to any online Production Exchange server, even cross version i.e. 2003 --> 2010Troy Werelius

Thanks for the update and;
Did you use DigiScope to look at the Database OFFLINE or by trying to connect to the production server? If you were using DigiScope to Connect to the Production version of the database we will not show disconnected mailboxes.
You will want to ensure you are looking at an OFFLINE copy of the database so that DigiScope can display all mailboxes within the database. If this is what you did and DigiScope cannot see the mailboxes then they are not within that database.
At this point I would suggest that restore a backup of that database to disk from a previous point in time and use DigiScope open and review for the missing mailboxes.Troy Werelius

Hi,
First, Do not change the retention period for such reason. Keep it as short as possible. Changing the retention to 365 Days can cause serious database issue, since Online Maintenance will never complete.
You can get those mailboxes only by restoring a good backup. Thanks Sunder
