Deleting the content of a large mailbox
We are running exchange server 2003 and the administrator mailbox is grown to 11GB size , I need to delete the content without deleting the mailbox. Of course I can't do that manually it will take ages. Please advise of the best way to delete the content
of that mailbox on the server

Hi soso2011
Removing messages on Exchange 2003 using ExMerge
The ExMerge utility can be used to extract mail items from mailboxes located on legacy Exchange Server versions.
Follow the steps in KB
HOW TO: Remove a Virus-Infected Message from Mailboxes by Using the ExMerge.exe Tool to remove unwanted messages from user mailboxes
Here is a good article for your thread, please follow it to resolve your issue.

Use the mailbox manager policies to empty the mailbox.

Hi everyone, Thanks for your replies. As in exmerge my understanding that it's simler to PST file and it will crash with a file of that size (11GB) I will give it ago anyway.
As in Mailbox manager policies , I'm not sure which one is that. Are you talking about delete mailbox task under exchange tasks?

Nope. Right-click "Recipient Policies" and then "New | Recipient
Policy..." and check the "Mailbox Manager Settings".

Thanks my understanding is polices you can apply to all mailboxes , can you pick only one mailbox to apply the polices on? I only need to clear the administrator mailbox so how to do that using polices?

Put some unique value in a custom attribute and create the ldap filter
for the mailbox manager policy to act only on mailboxes that contain
that value in that custom attribute.

Hi everyone,
I have used exmerge but no luck it ran for 8 hours and only done 300MB so I had to cancel it. for polices I'm not sure if there is any unique value that reletaes to all those message and only deletes them from the Administrator mailbox. Is
there a field to specify to or from on the polices if so maybe I can maybe I can set it if the receiver or sender is user administrator then delet all the message?

The value doesn't relate to any messages, it's something you'll use to
identify the mailbox.

I'm still not sure what will be the value to identify that mailbox, can it be the mailbox name? otherwise I will be a bit worried it might delete messages from other user mailboxes.

See below on how to create one. If you want, you can create a AD group and put the mailbox in question in there and target that group. If you need to perform this on any other mailboxes then you can simply just add the mailbox to the group.

Yes, it can.

I'll bet there's no other mailbox with a value of
"pleasedeleteallmymessagesrightnow!" in Custom Attribute 15 anywhere
in your organization.
