Disable Mailbox - Exchange 2010 SP1
I disabled the mailbox from a user and later wanted to re-attach it to the same users, but to my surprise I was not able to do so. The mailbox was listed under Disconnected Mailboxes but the user would not populate in the Existing User list.
I would think that it would show under "Matching User" too but nothing there either. I looked at the properties on the user from AD and it still has many Exchange attributes listed, I thought "Disable Mailbox" would clear these attributes ? Any
ideas why I'm unable to re-attach the mailbox ?
Thanks,
Arnie

You are right,
You should wait for some time and if still does not display and looking exchnage attribute then run remove mailbox which will delete attribute and then after some time it should appear.

Check in Mailbox to make sure that they don't have another mailbox attached to their account. If they do press F5 to make sure its just not EMC needing refreshed, if still there disable it again (make sure it can't be accessed and isn't needed first).
Its happened to me a couple of times usually an F5 sorts it but sometimes I need to disable it again, once I've disabled again it never shows up in the Disconnected mailboxes and I can go ahead and attach the original one again. Never
seen it happen before Rollup 3 so not sure if its a bug with it or not. Haven't got around to installing rollup 4 yet so don't know if its been fixed.

Make sure that AD account is not disabled otherwise it won't show up in the people picker when trying to reconnect.James Chong MCITP | EA | EMA; MCSE | M+, S+ Security+, Project+, ITIL msexchangetips.blogspot.com

Well... there was somehow another mailbox attached to this user, marked as legacy ?
I removed that one also, but when I went to attach the first mailbox removed it said it cold not find it any longer. Not big deal because it was a test account but I'll have to do some more testing. I'm goign to migrate a bunch of 2007 users
over to 2010. And then I want to be able in the future to disable and re-enable without any issues. I don't normally have to do it much but it needs to work.
Thanks for the tips they were helpful.

Sounds like the mailbox has still been on the 2007 server. Maybe there was a failure when you first disabled it and you didn't notice? I've never tried disabling a mailbox from EMC 2010 for a user thats on 2007 so not sure if it lets you or not.
May be worth doing "Get-MailboxDatabase | Clean-MailboxDatabase" works for me when mailboxes don't show up in the "Disconnected" menu.
