Disable open relay and anonymous access
I got exchange 2003 SBS. I want to disable the open relay and only authenticated users to receive /send emails.
These are some of the configuration I made. Under relay restriction, i have checked "all except the list below" and "allow all computers which successfully authenticate to relay, regardless of the list above". Under internet mail SMTP connector, "address
space" tab, i have an entry of my domain instead of *.
Now if I enable "anonymous access", users can receive emails but the server is detect as open relay
If I disable "anonymous access", users cannot receive / send emails.
May I know what else can I do?

To allow open relay you must have to allow anonymous access, You can open anonymous access by only can allow IP those you want to relay thru this SBS server.Anil MCC 2011,ITIL V3,MCSA 2003,MCTS 2010, My Blog : http://messagingschool.wordpress.com

I did not get what you mean. Can someone offer alternatives?

The relay restrictions should be none except the list below and the only IP addresss allowed to relay should be the private IP address of the SBS 2003's and any local equipment such as MFP's, etc that may need to relay. Also, any computer which authenticates
should be checked. This will allow Exchange to relay mail on behalf of the clients that authenticate.

As Falcon mentioned, please clear the settings in Relay Restrictions and select the “Only the list below” option. Also, you shouldn’t clear the
“Anonymous access” checkbox since it is not related to Relay.
What this actually does is it controls who has access to your SMTP service.
If you clear this option you will stop other SMTP servers from communicating with yours since they don’t have any other method of authenticating with each other.
