Disable syncing with public folder?
I have a user that's oversea and currently he is usingVPN back to the US server and use outlook via exchange. The user complains that it is very slow syncing the email due to the fact that it is also syncing folders under public folders. Is there a way to speed up the process for the user, so he doesn't have to sync the public folders? Is that a setting within outlook, or something I can change within our sbs 2003 server? Thanks!

In outlook profile go to his account settings and then Click on More Settings ->Advanced -> Under cached mode settings enable the use cached mode and uncheck the other two options

Hi Vinod, Thanks for the reply.Does that mean he's using the cache mode now, and by doing so, it is telling the exchange not to download anything within the public folder ? Thanks !

HI OXyi ,Using Outlook Cache mode users have ability to working with local copy of their mailbox during they dont have efficient network connection with the Exchange server. That mean not the 100% Cache mode doesnt synchronize with Exchange Server. There is a time interval to synchronize with exchange server by default and you can change those values via modifying registry. That synchronizes download new items from Exchange server and checks some delegation with exchange server. I have mention below some useful articles for more information.
=======================================================================================
How edit time values in the registry
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\Cached Mode registry key:
1. Upload=dword:0000000f (default is 15 seconds).
2. Download=dword:0000001e (default is 30 seconds)
3. Maximum=dword:0000003c (default is 60 seconds)

Public Folder *Favorites" can be cached. So if you uncheck that option, the mailbox will still be cached, but not the public folder favorites.

I am sorry that I am not sure why this turn into a cache thing, or maybe I am not understanding this.But what I want to archive is not SYNC the public folder at all when user check his email via outlook, but not disable it as well, because the user would still like to access it via the web interface. Since the connection speed for the user is slow, and there are way too much stuffs within the public folder all the time, therefore if I can disable checking/receiving from the pubic folder, that's what I am looking for.Thanks again.

Hi Chinthaka, Yes I have, but that is not what I am looking for tho. My user want his outlook not toSYNC with the public folders at all, when he is on the road using outlook via VPN. As in, when he opens up his outlook, regardless cache mode or not, it will do a Send/Receive, at that time, it will also check the public folders and downloads its contents , and he doesn't want to do it as it take too long, therefore I am looking for a way of not syncing/downloading the public folder when he check his emails. Thanks :)

Right, so uncheck the caching of public folder favorites. That wont prevent the user from accessing the public folders via OWA.
