Disappearing attachments
We are running Exchange 2003 Standard on 2003 Server R2 SP2, all mail is routed through Postini, we have GFI Mail essentials and Symantec Mail Security for Exchange. The server is also a DC and WINS server. For some reason certain emails with attachments just disappear, they will show up in the SMPT logs as events, but that's as far as they get, no evidence of them in message tracking, not in quarantine, or GFI. The most vexing part is that they are .doc attachments, and there seems to be no rhyme or reason to it. we have checked the extension blocking settings, tried disabling both GFI and Symantec with no luck (and we are testing with a known email that contains 2 .doc and 3 .pdf attachments, with the 2 .docs it fails every time, strip those out and the pdfs get through fine. Thanks in advance. Peter

My bet will be on GFI and Symantec. is there a way you can unsinatll these both (just for testing) an dthen see what is happeniong with the doc attachments. Also i think there is a way in postini to check if the attachments has crossed postini and recieved by exchange along with both the attachments. Just if postini stripped of the attachments or the GFI and Symantec.Raj

Hi,From the description, it seems that the third party (GFI mail or Symantec Mail) event causes this issue. That is because only events are available in SMTP log but no record in the message tracking log. This indicates the attachment is blocked in the SMTP phase and not submit into the queue to process at all.ThanksAllen
