Disk Defragmenter on Exchange Servers OS drives, not looking for Exchange Database Defragmentation information.
Hello All, does anyone have any documentation, suggestions, processes for running disk defragmenter on Exchange servers that are not hosting maiboxes. We have a medium sized Exchange installation (17,000 mailboxes) and we have dedicated servers running CAS, dedicated servers running HUB. I am looking for the process to defragment the OS disk on these servers? CAS servers seems to run well. HUB servers in particular I am having problems with. Do I need to disable the Exchange services and then run defrag? Exchange 2007 SP2 running on Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2.

Hi JMeyer, I don't know which kind of performance issue you are facing in your HUB transport server. But if you really want to defrag C drive you can do it. Yes you have to stop all Exchange Services and then do it. Some more information below: Do we need to file-level defragment Exchange database drives: http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2004/10/25/247342.aspx http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/exchangesvradmin/thread/8fca8946-a4be-4507-bae9-1f1a543ea086 Anil

Hi JMeyer2009, Where is the location of the Queue Databse on Transport Server? If it is on OS driver, suggest you move it to another disk, then run the Disk Defragment. Working with the Queue Database on Transport Servers http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124343(EXCHG.80).aspx I also think it is better to disable the Exchange services to run the defragment. They appear to be. When I run analyze on the C: (OS) drives on the dedicated HUB servers the graph is almost entirely RED. But, I have since learned that I probably should disable the Exchange services before attempting to defrag. I haven't attempted that yet but will be soon.Jason Meyer

Frank, thanks for the input. The queue database is on the D: drive (seperate spindle) on our HUB servers. Current plan is to disable Exchange services and attempt a disk defragment again. Jason Meyer

As the other posts indicate, it's necessary to disable Exchange services in order to manually defragment these servers, one exception being if you use Diskeeper to defrag server drives. Here is some documentation on defragmenting Exchange Servers: http://downloads.diskeeper.com/pdf/invisitasking-exchange-sql-server.pdf And here is some information on specifically defragmenting mail servers without having to disable or shut down Exchange services: http://www.diskeeper.com/defrag/dk-email-servers.aspx
