Display Name query
Hi
We have an application server that sends mail out with a From: addresss of application1@domain.com
Within Exchange, we also have a mailbox with email address application1@domain.com. The Display Name for this mailbox is "APP ALERTS".
I was wondering - when the application server sends an email to an internal Outlook client, what should the Display Name (i.e. From) show up as? Should it be application1@domain.com or "APP ALERTS"?
I was thinking that perhaps when the mail gets to Outlook, it performs some sort of lookup in the GAL to see if there is an existing SMTP address and then translates the Display Name to that? Or does this not happen at all - only if that Exchange mailbox sends the email would the Display Name appear as APP ALERTS...if the application server sent the mail, then it would appear as application1@domain.com
Hope this makes sense.

Not sure what version of Exchange you are using, but take a look at this recent thread:http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/exchangesvr3rdpartyapps/thread/f8262347-09e0-4fef-8956-bec722344726

Excellent, thanks. They mention a feature named Resolve Anonymous Sendershttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/828770"This behavior occurs when a message is submitted anonymously, such as from the Internet, and the sender of the message has been spoofed. By default, Exchange2003 preserves the original SMTP message submission method and does not resolve the sender's address if the SMTP submission is anonymous. If you want to permit anonymous submissions to be resolved to their respective Global Address List entries, you can use a new function named Resolve anonymous senders in Exchange 2003. This function allows you to resolve mail that is received anonymously by the SMTP virtual server. The Resolve anonymous senders function replaces the ResolveP2 function that is in Exchange 2000. "However, what do they mean by anonymous...the fact that that application server sending the mail to Exchange doesn't authenticate with Exchange? How would it be able to authenticate with Exchange - is this some kerberos thing or via username/password?

Here is an indepth look at authentication. Processes andmessages from the internet or from outside of Exchangethat send to a receive connector configured for anonymous access are generally what are considered anonymous senders:http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa997170.aspx
