Distribution Group creation
Is there any reason under Exchange 2010 that you cant use ADUC to create a DL? I understand it wont be upgraded to to 2010 standards (missing management features etc) but it will work just fine. Is there any reason that one cant continue to do this?

If its created via ADUC, it wont get stamped with the correct ShowinAddressBook attrbutes, so it wont be visible in the GAL nor will it have the correct recipienttype. You wont be able to correctly manage it and it could also bite you later during upgrades

I left out an important bit, we still have 2003 servers in the org, RUS still running..... so attributes are getting stamped correctly. But understood complete once in a pure 2010 environment

But not all of them. The ADUC snap-in doesn't know anything about the changes to the schema made between Exchange 2003, 2007, and 2010. >But understood complete once in a pure 2010 environment Nope. You should be managing thise objects in the EMC, not with ADUC. Exchange 2010 is still going to use them so they should have the full compliment of populated properties. --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP

In addition, it's important to note the terminology differences between Active Directory and Exchange 2010. In Active Directory, a distribution group refers to any group that doesn't have a security context, whether it's mail-enabled or not. In contrast, in Exchange 2010, all mail-enabled groups are referred to as distribution groups, whether they have a security context or not. And here is another post for reference.
