Distribution lists greyed out after mailboxes moved locally to different database.
I am running Exchange 2010 on Server 2008 Standard. This is also the PDC. Was running out of space on the Exchange partition, so added another array. All of the users were in the same mail database. I created new databases to reflect
the users Active Directory containers on the new array and performed local moves on all users to their corresponding databases. Everything fine, all working. Dismounted old database.
When accessing the distribution lists (not security distribution lists) they are all greyed out except for the only Universal list. I can delete and recreate the other list and I am able to edit after re-creation. My question is. Is there
a way to make them active again without having to re-create them. Do they need to be associated with the new mailbox databases if so, since there are multiple databases now does this affect anything? Any other side information would be greatly
appreciated.
Thanks

Groups are not associated with either mailboxes or the databases in
which they're stored. They exist solely in the AD. Whatever the reason
for this phenomemon it's nothing to do with moving mailboxes to new
databases.

Use the ADUC and change the scope on a couple of the groups to
"Universal". Does that revive them in the MEC?

.. . . or use the MEC to select the group and change it to a Universal
group.

No kidding? I do, too. Not that the people I work for now would ever
let me attend one. :-( They squeeze a nickel so hard the buffalo
fertilizes the grass.
Perhaps not so obviously, that should have been EMC (not to be
confused with the company by the same name), not MEC. :-)

THe membership of a universal group is stored in the gc partiton of AD. The membership of a domain group is not and you'll need to specify the expansion server. It's best just to convert them to universal. You'll save yourself a lot of pain in
the end.
