Domain renamed Exchange won't start
Our small company was recently absorbed by a large corporation that uses Lotus Notes. I told all of my Outlook users to archive their email into a PST file, for history. Most did. Then we moved into the new building, the Exchange box was turned off, the old domain no longer exists. Now a few users that did not create PST files absolutely have to see their Exchange email.I turned the Exchange box on, logged on as the local administrator with the goal of using Exmerge to create the missing PST files. but Exmerge cannot find the mail "domain". the services won't start because of the missing domain. What can I do?

Sorry, I dont mean to state the obvious, but: Do you have access to any spare hardware or VM infrastructure? You could restore a DC from backup (do you have backup) then mount your databases. Were the users in Outlook Cached mode?Mike Crowley: MCT, MCSE, MCTS, MCITP: Enterprise Administrator / Messaging Administrator

I have not tried it but a quick search found this tool which claims to restore mailboxes from an offline database:http://www.download32.com/exchange-database-recovery-i38550.html Mike Crowley: MCT, MCSE, MCTS, MCITP: Enterprise Administrator / Messaging Administrator

I agree with Mike, you need to either build old infrastructure in test/VM environment by restoring from backup or use some third party utility to extract data from the database without bringing Exchange or Domain online.OnTrack has similar tools which has capability to extract the data from edb/stm file offline.http://www.ontrackpowercontrols.com/solutions/exchange-email-recovery/Amit Tank | MVP - Exchange | MCITP:EMA MCSA:M | http://ExchangeShare.WordPress.com
