Downgrade license
Is there a way to downgrade Exchange from enterprise to standard? We only discovered our server is Enterprise edition. Perhaps it is because we are using the Select scheme and entered wrong license number.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but no you cannot downgrade, only upgrade. Link is for 2010, but applies to other versions: From: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb232170.aspx "Product keys can be used for the same edition key swaps and upgrades only; they can't be used for downgrades. You can use a valid product key to move from the evaluation version (Trial Edition) of Exchange Server 2010 to either Standard Edition or Enterprise Edition. You can also use a valid product key to move from Standard Edition to Enterprise Edition. "Tim Harrington - Catapult Systems - http://HowDoUC.blogspot.com

Officially next method is not supported, but it's possible: 1. Run ADSI Edit tool 2. Connect to 3. In connection settings Select a well known Naming Context - Configuration 4. Expand Configuration - Services - Microsoft Exchange - "Name of your Organization" - Administrative Groups - Exchange Administrative Group (FYDIBOHF23SPDLT) - Servers 5. Click server Properties 6. Clear msExchProductID attribute 7. Restart Microsoft Exchange Information Store service if server holds mailbox role 8. Enter New Product Key using Exchange Management Console or PowerShell Set-ExchangeServer -Identity Server1 -ProductKey xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx 9. Restart Microsoft Exchange Information Store service

Awesome! stan82. Thanks for providing a long waited answer. Although I have not try this on my live server, it did work on the VM testing platform. One question: have you tried on your environment?

We had the same problem with enterprise licenses on 2 CAS+HT servers with Public Folders (CAS+HT+MB roles). We downgraded edition to standard and it works perfectly for more than 2-3 months. I believe it would work with no problem on Edge role (but requires to re-create Edge subscription). We didn't test MB roles with DAG group. If you'll make it I think everyone would be grateful for this knowledge.
