E2K7SP2 not delivering messages to journal recipient
I'm trying to set up per-mailbox database journaling on an Exchange 2007 server running on Windows Server 2008R2 Standard machine. I've successfully completed the process before by creating a new user mailbox, going to the properties of the desired mailbox database and setting that mailbox as the journal recipient. What I expect to see is the journal recipient's mailbox receiving a copy of all message to and from that database. What I actually see is nothing at all. I've checked the transport logs of a 2007 SP2 Exchange server running on SBS 2008 that is successfully doing per-mailbox database journaling and it would seem that there is nothing recorded even when it's working. I've also used this server as a comparison for settings, making sure security permissions on the AD account are the same, existing transport rules are not the rule, etc. The easiest work around would be to create 2 new transport rules to send all inbound and outbound rule as a BCC to the journal recipient. I'm hesitant to do to this because a: it's messy and can become unmanageable in the future and b: I like my servers functioning correctly I'm completely at a loss as to where to start troubleshooting this! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Edit: I forgot to add I'v installed SP2 to see if that made a difference (which it didn't).

Hello, Use this command to check the journaling setting on the databases Get-Mailboxdatabase| fl name, journalrecipient If you have sat journaling on database, use mailbox in that database to send one test email, then check whether your new created mailbox can receive the journal message or not. Hi Evan This is somehting I've checked/tested already but for the benefit of the thread: [PS] C:\Windows\system32>Get-Mailboxdatabase| fl name, journalrecipientName : Mailbox DatabaseJournalRecipient : DOMAIN.local/MyBusiness/Users/Journal and [PS] C:\Windows\system32>Get-Mailbox test |fl Primarysmtpaddress, database PrimarySmtpAddress : test@example.com.au Database : MXSRV001\First Storage Group\Mailbox Database Emails sent to/from test@example.com.au are not delivered to the journal recipient mailbox as expected. I have sending to internal and external accounts and sending from internal and external accounts. When I said I don't know where to where to start troubleshooting this I mean I've checked everything is set up correctly and nothing is showing as wrong. Windows Event logs are showing no errors, there are no messages stuck in any queues, basically the server looks 100% but doesn't do what is's told. Thanks for your time so for, I'm looking forward to more sugestions. Regards,

If you create one new database, and set journaling on the new database, then check this issue will work or not? If not, you can move all the mailboxes to the new database, then remove the old database. Thanks, EvanEvan Liu TechNet Community Support

Hi Evan Very helpful advice although unfortunately not the answer in this case. Here are the steps I took: Created a new database "Test Database" in "First Storage GroupCreated 3 new mailboxes: jtest1, jtest2 and jboxSet jbox as the journal recipient for "Test Database"Sent mail to/from jbox to make sure send/receive is workingSend mail between jtest1 and jtest2 in both directionsSent mail to and replied from an external accountCreated storage group "Second Storage Group" and "Test Database 02"Moved the 3 mailboxes to the new "Test Database 02"Tested journaling by sending mail locally/externally None of the messages sent or received were archived to the "jbox" journal recipient.

Couldn't afford to leave this unresolved so in the end I set up 2 transport rules. One BCCs the journal recipient all mail sent to users inside the organisation and the other BCCs the journal recipient all mail sent to users outside the organisation.
