Edge Server
We are currently deploying an Exchange 2010 Server in an Exchange 2003 domain and we are now at the point to deploy the Edge Role. The question is do we need to deploy AD LDS on the domain controller and setup an instance that the Edge server AD LDS connects to?

AD LDS will be a prereq to install on the Edge server. You dont need AD LDS elsewhere and Edge cannot use AD LDS outside its own server. lasse at humandata dot se, http://anewmessagehasarrived.blogspot.com

No you dont, see this - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124701.aspx AD LDS is installed on the edge server NOT the DC. The DC on your internal networks actually has AD installed, the full blown version, edge uses AD LDS, as it contains partial information which is requred for recipient filtering and connector info. It's a one way synch.Sukh
