(1) Your Edge Transport server should be either in a work group or in a forest different from your Exchange organization. (2) Use the DMZ, more often now referred to as your perimeter network. (3) In general, you should have two Edge Transport servers to provide fault-tolerance when you use the Edge Subscription process to establish inbound and outbound mail flow (see part 6 in Walther Henrik's article series). While an Edge Subscription is the recommended approach, you can also use the Edge as a simple smart host without any subscription. In order to achieve fault-tolerance in this scenario with only one Edge server, create two MX records, one point so the Edge and one to the Hub Transport (higher value for the Hub). For outbound mail, configure two smart hosts, one pointing to the Edge, the other to your ISP. This would provide automatic failover when your Edge Transport server is down. All inbound mail will go through your Edge Server when it's up and running. But outbound mail will be load-balanced, and only about 50 % will go through the Edge. If you want to have the Edge handle all outbound mail while it's running, you have to define only the Edge as your Smart Host, and do a manually reconfiguration when the Edge is down. The article series below is highly recommended. Hi! As your senario in the document that you give me the link, i can understand more about the configuration of Edge Transport role. the configuration as : 1. My Internal Network have AD, Exchange and Clients and then I need to have a firewall between my Internal Network to Edge Transport Server. 2. From the Edge Transport Server, I need to have a firewall between Edge server to Internet. that is correct! My question are, 1. I must to have two firewalls from Internet to my Internal Network or not? 2. how can I design my network Environment for Edge Transport with a firewall? 3. It possible for my design Network Environment as bellow: - From the Internet I have a firewall then I have two range Network as 1. A 10.10.1.0/24 for my Local Network (Exchange Server and PDC) 2. A 10.10.10.0/24 for my Edge Transport Server Please give me some idea about this becuase i am very new for this case, thanks.

You could two firewalls, one between the Edge and the Internet, and one between your Edge and internal network. Or you could have one three-legged firewall, one leg to the Internet, one to the DMZ (10.10.10.0/24) and one to the internal network 10.10.1.0/24).MCTS: Messaging | MCSE: S+M
