Effect of changing default Accepted Domain?
Exchange 2007 SP2 I have two "Accepted Domains" - MyOrganisation.loc - MyOrganisation.org I took screenshots of much of the configuration of our Exchange server as it existed when I set it up, not quite two years ago. I thought this could be useful for troubleshooting (keeping track of initial configuration and configuration changes). I noticed that the default Accepted Domain, which was MyOrganisation.org on March 20, 2009, is now MyOrganisation.loc - since July 22, 2010. (You can see when the object was modified in properties). Besides the obvious reason (me changing it inadvertently while doing something in this section - see below), I am wondering: 1) Could anything else change this? 2) What effect could changing the default Accepted Domain have? - (None, from what I can tell but, never hurts to ask). Both Accepted Domains are there, and mail flow, both INBOUND and OUTBOUND, functions OK, with one notable exception discussed in a thread of its own. I am usually very meticulous about documenting changes made (switching from Smart Hosts to plain DNS in the Send Connector properties, for example) but it's obviously possible that I simply forgot to note this one. Other configuration settings remain the same. Exact time of change took place a day I was at work, and at a time when I could very well have been working on the servers. We were updating documentation following a review, so it was probably in that context (as opposed to hackers changing a setting that they would gain nothing from changing - as far as I can see).

it does not really affect much but it can be a problem. .LOCAL works by default and it is necessary when you setup your AD and setup your Exchange. .COM and .NET or whatever work for the FQDN. So if you have user IT@MyOrganization.local and IT@MyOrganization.COM , set the IT@MyOrganization.com as the Primary SMTP Address , so the receinpient will this address at their end else at the receving end the email will appear as .local.

Hello Gavin, Yes, I think I must have changed that when taking screenshots for documentation. Must have had a reason I don't remember six months later. Users have the correct suffix (.org instead of .local) because of a Email address policy that makes the address .org rather than .local.
