Email Policy handling
Hello
I have a question concerning e-mail policies in exchange server 2007. I plan to use more than one e-mail domain. Two are mandatory for all user, and other two are for special divisions. Will this work: Modify the default policy for the mandatory domains, add two new polices for the other (query on memberof, or extension attribute)?
1- will all get the mandartory mail addresses?
2- will the new generated and the default policy apply?
3- will they always reapply, or when will this not work?
How is it possible to re-apply all the policies to clean up the users email addresses? Ex. to remove an old domain?
Thanks a lot for the help

Hi Norbert,
1. Only the highest priority email address policy will apply to user.
For example, you have two email address policy:
Policy A:
Email Address: @domain1.com
Priority: 1
Policy B:
Email Address: @domain2.com
Priority: 2
When a new user is created, if the user is applied to filter setting in the Policy 1, the @domain1.com will be configured as email-address. The policy 2 will not be applied to the user.
Therefore, if you would like to have specific user has both email addresses and all users have one email address, you need to configure email address policy like below:
Policy A:
Email Address:@domain1.com;@domain2.com
Priority: 1
Policy B:
Email Address: @domain2.com
Priority: 2
2. If an email address policy is removed, the email address policy will be re-applied to user. Nevertheless, the existed email address on user will not be removed. You need to use some tool to remove them such as admodify.

Hello MikeThanks for explaining this to me. Another question about e-mail policy. Do you recommend to clean up the policy (domains) before migrate them to Exchange Server 2007, or after? As you told before, the users will not be affected when I remove an entry, right? Well the Domain is still available for exchange, that e-mails can be handled by the server. Thanks for the Input with ADModify. I will test this.ThanksNorbert

Hi Norbert,
Please understand that the e-mail address recipient policy concept in Exchange 2003 is separated into two concepts in Exchange 2007: E-mail Address Policies (EAP) and Accepted Domains.
EAP defines the e-mail proxy addresses that are stamped onto recipient objects. Accepted domains define the SMTP namespaces for which an Exchange organization routes e-mail. In Exchange 2007, authoritative and relay domains are managed together as accepted domains.

Hello againI'veagain aquestion - when i migrate the policies from 2003 to 2007, they will be re-applied (right?). Which order should i follow? Highest or lowest policyfirst? And, Exchang 2003 can work fine when all policies are migrated to exchange 2007? Also if some domains are only configured as "accepted domain"?ThanksNorbert

Hello I noticed, after a migration of a policy this will be applied on all users. before it was configured with the criteria "Company Name", after this was empty. Is this normal?ThanksNorbert

Mike,
I have an issue with email policy whereby the alias is not the users login account but FirstnameLastname, which is the default for alias.
I created a policy on your Policy A above and the alias is wrong eithe way, any idea why. I have approx 200 more to create and would prefer not to do them manually.
