Email archiving with exchange 2013
Good Day to All,
We have been looking into a third party Email Archiving Solution (Barracuda) for removing attachments from emails and storing them in an Archive; also pulling in PSTs. I halted any purchase of the 3rd party product waiting to see what
Exchange 2013 brings out of the box in regards to email archiving. Does anyone have first hand exposure to these features in 2013? I am wanting to know if they robust enough not to need a 3rd party App or are they just enough
to be able to say they have some capabilities embedded in the product. What is available in Exchange 2007 and 2010 is not enough for us.

This really isn't a question that can be answered in a forum like this. I can talk about the subject for days.
First part of answer...
What are you using archiving for? Any specific legal reasons? Trying to reduce mailbox size? Something else? It makes a big difference in the answer. In Exchange-Speak, there's the concept of journaling that keeps all messages without the user having the
ability to delete it and there's the concept of archiving that allows users to keep messages.
Exchange 2010 and Exchange 2013 do an awesome job of archiving my emails. I keep part of my mail in my primary mailbox, and the old stuff in the archive mailbox. It works great.
Are you required to keep all messages for legal compliance for all users? You'll probably want a third-party product for this. But make sure that you follow the guidance for sizing Exchange for this. This is will require journaling and will require all messages
to effectively be sent twice, once to the destination, once to the journal mailbox.
Probably the most important concept is that if you are trying to reduce Exchange storage by moving things to an archive solution, with a little research, I think that you'll find that it is MUCH more economical to keep the information in the Exchange database.
With the 100GB mailbox support, 3TB DAS drives, I believe that you'll find that third party archiving solutions will cost an arm and leg as well as require a fair amount of administration.Ed

What is available in Exchange 2007 and 2010 is not enough for us.
I see you already evaluated the archiving features of Exchange 2010. Basically, what you have in Exchange 2010 SP2 is what you have in Exchange 2013. As far as I know there are no investments in this area, no new features.Did my post help? Please use "Vote As Helpful", "Mark as answer" or "Propose as answer". Thank you!
