How about "telnet <server-ip-address> 25"? If that works, try the "telnet <server-ip-address> 25" from another machine, preferably on the same network. In other words, start you testing as close as you can get to the machine with the problem and then work your way out from there. The next question to ask is "what's changed in the last few days?" Anti-virus updates or A/V configuration changes on the server? Patches? Network changes? DNS changes? Do you have the Scalable Network Pack installed? http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2008/03/12/3405136.aspx Are you NIC drivers and firmware up-to-date? --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP

Any chance you've gotten a device with a duplicate IP onto the network?[string](0..33|%{[char][int](46+("686552495351636652556262185355647068516270555358646562655775 0645570").substring(($_*2),2))})-replace " "

Make sure smtp service is started, smtp virtual server is started and is binded to port 25. Also see if you have multiple smtp virtual servers as in the case when you install third party apps that may have conflicting settings. Also try recreating your smtp virtual server if all else fails.James Chong MCITP | EA | EMA; MCSE | M+, S+ Security+, Project+, ITIL msexchangetips.blogspot.com

Hi, At the time the error telnet 127.0.0.1 does not work. After a while telenet works and another 25 from 127.0.0.1 network pcs. Has not been updated and the AV updates or Windows. The server firmware update months ago that, but gave no server problems

I do not think, I have DHCP enabled on your network

Just because you have DHCP enabled doesn't mean everything is using it. You should be able to check this by doing a telnet to port 25 at the connector address, and checking your arp table (arp -a), and then keep trying the telnet until it stops working an re-check the arp then. If it's a duplicate address, the arp entries will be different when it works than when it doesn't.[string](0..33|%{[char][int](46+("686552495351636652556262185355647068516270555358646562655775 0645570").substring(($_*2),2))})-replace " "

You didn't answer any of the questions about the Scalable Network Pack. Do you have any file-level Antivirus on the server? Does it have any "consumer" features enabled that would block port 25? Does this problem happen only when someone is logged in directly on the machine? Does the problem disappear if they log off? --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP

Hi _JoseMB, How about the issue, any updates? Do you follow Rich’s suggestion to check for the issue? Thanks, Evan

1 .- It has been updated the firmware of the NIC for months. 2 .- It happens from all computers. If I restart the SMTP service is working properly. The store has 1.2 GB of RAM used 3 .- I have made sure that no duplicate IP. 4 .- In the eventvwr leaves no record of what happens. 5 .- I have AV antispam level only. 6 .- I have not installed the Scalable Network Pack http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=948496 Thanks

what do you get when you run netstat when smtp isnt working? what if you up the logging for smtp? anything in the event logs? what if you completely disable AV (if possible) and monitor? Same with firewall if on server?Sukh

Hi _JoseMB_, Yes, use netstat to check for port 25 (when smtp isn’t working). I also suggest you change the logging level, to check if you can get any related information: How to Configure Diagnostics Logging http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa996402(EXCHG.65).aspx Follow this document to change logging level for SMTP protocol (under MSExchangeTransport), then check for the event log.
