Yes, Windows 2008 R2 is still RC, we may need to wait for RTM on 22nd Oct. Not sure which error given by 2008 but you may try running ExBPA to see the health of your Exchange environment.Amit Tank | MVP Exchange Server | MCITP: EMA | MCSA: M | http://ExchangeShare.WordPress.com

Getting the same error as others on uninstall on Server 2008 R2:An error occurred. The error code was 3221685466. The message was The service is already registered..Is there a work around? I'm trying to move to Exchange 2010 RC. I would rather not have to try and remove the server manually using ADSI Edit.I do now know that Exchange 2007 is not supported on Server 2008 R2 but I got it to install by using Vista compatibility mode.I have already tried making a shortcut and pasting in: C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\bin\exsetupui.exe -mode:uninstall and then runnnig that under compatibility mode but the error still persists. Thanks for any help.RobinRobin Wilson

I have the same problem. It's a fresh setup of Windows Server 2008 R2 and Exchange 2007 SP1. There went something wrong during the installation (missing dependency or something like that). Now the installation thinks it's not installed but tells me I have to finish 'Uninstall' first. If I try to uninstall, I get the same error as OP (3221685466). How can I get a list of registered services and their dll-names and how do I unregister it (regsvr32 /u)? The real bad thing is that this happened years ago with my first Exchange 2003 setup. I decided to change the hostname of the server. After that, Exchange did no longer work at all and I was not able to deinstall or reinstall it. The only solition I found was starting with a fresh installation of Windows Server and Exchange. But that's another story. :)

For me it appeared as if even though I got that error and removal of the mailbox role failed it had removed it from the list of servers from Exchange Management Console so I was able to format the server with no obvious problems. I checked it with ADSIEdit as well and no reference to the old server could be found.I would normally format a server anyway after removing Exchange so the fact that I could not remove the exchange files was not really a problem.knarf_camelot: Exchange 2007 SP1/2 is not officially supported on Server 2008 R2 with SP2 actually blocking the install. You can get around it with SP1 by running it in Vista Compatibility Mode but if you later try to remove it, it seems as if you hit the above error when attempting to remove the mailbox role.RobinRobin Wilson

Hi,I have got same error here on Windows Server 2008 R2 64Bit with Exchange 2007 64Bit SP1. I uninstalled all roles successfully but I can not uninstall mailbox role. It keeps giving same weird error as:[9/8/2009 10:13:45 AM] [2] [ERROR] An error occurred. The error code was 3221685466. The message was The service is already registered..I tried several things like installing Rollup 9 SP1 for Exchange 2007. Nothing works. Eventually I tried changing Registery key from "Uninsall" into "Install".HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Exchange\v8.0\Mailbox\ there is a key under this registy which says "Uninstall"I changed it to "Install" and re-tried uninstalling. It WORKS :) I didn't quarantee but worth to try. (I couldn't find any other article about this subject since it is not supported.) Kind of worked for me. The reason it won't un-install now is "Cannot find the object server01.domain.com on Domain Controller server01.domain.com"Now I know this sounds stupid, but...Surely it can find itself? How the ____ did it install if it couldn't?The server is DC, DNS, GC and ExchangeThere are entries in DNS for the server, they are correct (Both Foward and Reverse Lookups)Ping resolution, however comes back as IPv6 address. I have removed IPv6 bindings from the NIC, but then the exchange service doesn't start and I can't remove it because of that.I can post logs later if needed.Any hints, tips, weapons of Exchange destruction gladly accepted.
November 12th, 2009 12:23pm

Did you get the error before removing IPv6?Exchange 2007+ needs IPv6 to function properly I believe. If you are just getting the error about it not being able to find the object since IPv6 was removed then you could try re-enabling IPv6 and then seeing ifyou can then remove it. I'm guessing you tried removing IPv6 because of the error though. In that case it could be a firewall maybe which is stopping communication including possibly the windows firewall? When uninstalling did you tick the boxto say it was the last exchange server in the organisation (if it is that is)?I know there can be issues with installing Exchange on a domain controller sometimes. I can't remember what they are though.RobinRobin Wilson

I had a crashed 2008 & EX2007SP1 server (couldn't) login anymore, with any account, not even AD Restore mode.....So I quickly installed a 2008 R2 server and tried installing 2007 SP1, which worked, but with a lot of errors. Then I read this configuration wasn't supported, so I decided to uinstall 2007 SP1 to install 2010, which didn't work !ORC: thanks ! The registry change worked flawlessly !PS: strange thing the setup of exchange 2007 sp1 doesn't complain about 2008 R2, it just installs....

Hello vickyin2007Unfortunately you cannot install Exchange 2007 SP2 on Server 2008 R2 as Microsoft decided to block the install completely although SP1 worked fine. You can still install Exchange 2007 SP1, just not SP2. If you are doing a new install you would be better off going for Server 2008 R2 and Exchange 2010 or if it has to be Exchange 2007 then I would probably recommend using Server 2008 instead as it is supported and allows you to have the most up to date version of it (SP2).RobinRobin Wilson

Modify the registry key worked for me, fresh installation of Win2008 R2 + Ex 2007 SP1. In fact, when I was trying to apply Ex 2007 SP2, it tells me right there that 2008 R2 does not support Ex 2007. No wondering the installation process was never smooth at the first place.
