Error trying to recover from tape backup.
I'm having a very strange problem trying to restore an Exchange 2007 mailbox from tape. I'm running DPM 2007 SP1 and Exchange 2007 SP1 in a CCR configuration. I'm getting the following
error when I try to restore from tape "DPM encountered a retryable VSS error. (ID 30112 Details: Unknown error (0x800423f3) (0x800423F3))". The total data transferred is only 89MB. A restore from disk works without any errors.
Here are steps I’ve tried so far:
Restored 'Storage Group 1' from Tape = error
Restored 'Storage Group 2'
from the same tape = no errors!
It seems that this error only appears for that specific storage group and only when trying to restore from tape. I've tried to restore from different
tapes and I get the same results. It seems to affect only this particular storage group. I looked at the logs on the Exchange server and found event ID 494
'Information Store (1760) Recovery Storage Group: Database recovery failed with error -1216 because it encountered references to a database which is no longer present'
I proceeded with another restore from tape and I did see a couple of VSS errors. I ran the command on the active node (I'm running CCR) and this is what i got:
Writer name: 'Microsoft Exchange Writer'
Writer Id: {76fe1ac4-15f7-4bcd-987e-8e1acb462fb7}
Writer Instance Id: {67600d3b-aa11-499b-8c39-c24e91a99bf6}
State: [7] Failed
Last error: Retryable error
and
Writer name: 'Cluster Service Writer'
Writer Id: {41e12264-35d8-479b-8e5c-9b23d1dad37e}
Writer Instance Id: {88202f54-6a19-4505-a0d1-c1fa5bc6ae43}
State: [1] Stable
Last error: Non-retryable error
How to I fix these VSS errors?
Thank you!
Martin.

Hi Martin,
Some suggestion for you:
1. I would suggest that you implementate the update roll-up 9 for
Exchange 2007 SP1, I have run into some issues caused by this.
2. Check whether the system path is the same as the logs, we could manually move the system path to the log folder
3. Restart the IS service, and test again
If the issue still existed, please tell us
Regards!
Gavin!
