Error when changing RUS server for demotion of first exchange server on domain
Hello All I am currently moving roles from the first exchange server in the forest to a new server before decommisioning and I am getting an error message while attempting to change the server role for the RUS server. The two servers are Exchagne 2003 with SP2. Within the RUS container are two objects - The enterprise object has allowed me to change the server role to the new server with no issues. However the domain object fails when I change the server with the following error "The group name could not be found - Facility Win32 - ID no:C00708AC - Exchange System Manager". This error is displayed in a popup window, but no event log is written for the occurance. I have done some research and found MS article 285334, which only seems to apply to Exchange 2000 and talks about users or groups being named exchange - I have checked through the AD and could only find the Exchange objects for servers (Domain and Enterprise) so I tend to discount this article. I need to be able to change the role on this server so I can successfully decommision the first server, so all help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance Paul

The support article 285334 does not apply to your environment because you probably don't have any ADC (active directory connectors configured) this is old Exchange 5.5 migration stuff However ADC and RUS both change properties on Exchange Mailboxes... Can you check if these groups exist in your domain? - Exchange Services - Exchange Admins Deli

You might also want to restart the Microsoft Exchange System Attendant service on the legacy server. The System Attendant is responsible for maintaining membership in the Exchange Domain Servers group and other credentialing. Restarting the System Attendant will force it to reestablish its security context. It sounds like this may have been lost. Restarting the System attendant will also take down the Information Store, so, hopefully all of the mailboxes have been moved off. Regards, Larry

Hi Deli No these groups do not exist - Only the Exchange server groups are in the AD as far as I can see. Can I recreate these groups? This could be the issue as it is related to groups. Regards Paul

A further question, could I create a new RUS for the domain, which points to the correct server then remove the other RUS entry? would that resolve my issue without causing more problems?
