Event ID 9646 on Exchange 2003 server
I have started seeing lots of event 9646 (source: MSExchangeIS) on my Exchange server. I have a Server 2008 R2 domain with Exchange 2003 on Server 2003 SP2. The clients are a mix of OWA, 2003, 2007, and 2010. Here are samples of the most frequent details under the 9646 event: Mapi session "/O=OBSCURED/OU=OBSCURED/cn=Recipients/cn=USERNAME" exceeded the maximum of 250 objects of type "objtMessage". Mapi session "/O=OBSCURED/OU=OBSCURED/cn=Recipients/cn=USERNAME" exceeded the maximum of 500 objects of type "objtMessageView". I've tried a number of different things over the last several weeks including updates, reboots, database error checking and creating/migrating accounts to new messages stores but the errors persist. I don't see any obvious problems and everyone is able to send/receive emails but I'm concerned that this may be an indicator of a larger problem. Any ideas on what else I could try to see what is causing this? Dan

Another thought on this problem: Most articles I've read point to the client as the culprit here rather than something on the server side. We do have plugins for Outlook which I'm thinking may contribute to the problem. One is for GFI MailArchiver and the other is for a project management product called Connections Online.Dan

The first thing to do ist to stop trying to fix the problem at the server -- unless you really want people having more than 200 messages open at the same time. Your problem is at the client side. Most likely an something you've added to Outlook or to the desktop (e.g. a desktop search engine). --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP
