Excel 2013 64-bit (15.0.4667.1000) Crashes When Plotting Regression Residuals

After the latest update, plotting regression residuals using the Analysis ToolPack add-ins causes 64-bit Excel 2013 (15.0.4667.1000 ) to crash and stop working.

On an older version of Excel 2013 (64 bit 15.0.4649.1000), I can use the Analysis ToolPack add-ins without a problem and plot the residuals.

Is this a known problem?

This issue is due to the Faulting module name: mso.dll.

Please try the 2 method:

1. Renamed the MSO.DLL in

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office 15\root\vfs\ProgramFilesCommonX86\Microsoft Shared\OFFICE15

The copied the MSO.DLL from

C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\OFFICE15

to

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office 15\root\vfs\ProgramFilesCommonX86\Microsoft Shared\OFFICE15

2. If we installed KB2880987, please try to remove it to test.

Hope it's helpful.

how do i upload dump file to one cloud?
November 27th, 2014 1:22pm

I do not have a "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\OFFICE15" folder on this PC. I have OFFICE14 instead of OFFICE15. I swapped MSO.dll files as you suggested in step 1. I did not have the update installed on my PC as you indicated in step 2.

I retested running the regression in Excel and plotting the residuals and Excel still crashed.

I will attempt to test this on another PC as well.

i am unclear on the recommendation.  can you provide more guidance?
November 30th, 2014 4:28pm

I re-attempted these steps on my Windows 8.1 Enterprise 64-bit PC running Excel 2013 64 bit 15.0.4667.1000. The directory "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office 15\root\vfs\ProgramFilesCommonX86\Microsoft Shared\OFFICE15" in step 1 does not exist. The directory "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office 15" does not exist on this PC so I was unable to hunt for and locate the MSO.DLL file referenced.

KB2880987 is not installed on this PC.

Anyone found a solution to this issue yet?

(I'm running Excel 64-bit also and don't have the directories or files referenced in the workaround)

I've had similar issues ONLY when using Office 2013. My Macro crashes at random. The only way I can get it to open is to save it to another computer and re open on my 2013. I calked Microsoft and listed on the forum. The response was my macro is corrupt.  There is nothing wrong with my macros. They work perfectly fine on my desktop which has Windows 7 Office 2010. IMHO there are done issues with 2013 although it has great features that 2010 does not offer

Hello Larbec,

Don't put any reliance on MS "support". I called them on a license issue for Office 365 and she had no clue what that was ... go figure ....

Although it might be a bug with some versions/updates, can you try running the failing macro on a similar computer, only with more RAM?

December 14th, 2014 4:55pm

I tested again. My 64-bit version of Excel 2013 has been updated to 15.0.4675.1000. Plotting regression residuals using the Analysis ToolPack add-ins still causes Excel 2013 to crash, BUT it recovers and displays a Book1 (version 1).xlsxb [Recovered] file with the regression analysis and residual plots.

So progress in the right direction, but still broken.

Any progress or thoughts on this, Microsoft?

This problem no longer exists in Excel 2016 Preview (64-bit).

Good enough for me, I suppose.

I am having the exact same issue. Everytime I run a Regression analysis and add any type of plots Excel crashes. Is there any fix?

Any reply from Microsoft, it is clear that is a know issue for all communities, is there any fix/patch coming soon?
