Hi,

when I create a new file xlsx from right click->new - > spreadsheet Excel, it create me a file that cannot be opened with Excel 2013.

The error that excel return me is: "Excel cannot open the file 'filename.xlsx' because the file format or file extension is not valid. Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file."

If I see the properties of this file it's 0 bytes.

The problem return me after that I've make a windows update of the pc.

The software installed is windows 7 and Office Professional Plus 2013.

This problem has been confirmed to be caused by malware on the affected machine. There are now two known variants of malware which causes this problem: Win32/Crilock.A and Win32/Buma!rts. They have both been identified as a new family of ransomware.

Try using adwcleaner to see if you are affected.

It's not this kind of malware because I've made a scan of the pc and it hasn't found.

The very strange thing is if I do a repair of the Office 2013 installation it return to works normally.

The difference between a week ago and now (when the problem has been discovered for the first time) is that I've done a lot of Windows update (only security)

We have not received similar issue on our forum yet. Does Excel work normally now? Did this issue occur again after repaired? Did you install some third-party programs recently? If yes, some third-party program may be damage Office.  If no, I can't confirm this issue was caused by the Windows update. Would you like to share us a screenshot about Windows update history list?

I hope to find a solution because for now I have as the only workaround to repair the installation Office professional plus 2013.

Hi Who_911, if a repair of Office can resolve the problem, it doesn't seem like an update issue then. As ahuibers mentioned, I would also suspect it's caused by a malware or, more likely in your scenario, something damaged the Excel components so a repair is needed.

Anyway, are you the only user affected by this? Or there are other users and that's why you suspect it's an update issue?

I'm not the only user affected by this problem, but all the users that has received that updates...

Hello,

I can confirm we're having the same issue here (win 7SP1 x64 with Office 2013 SP1 32-bits, Dutch MUI): right-clicking and then selecting "New" - "Excel file" generates a 0 byte document that cannot be opened in Excel.  Word & PowerPoint work fine in this way though.

Tested this on a freshly rolled out machine using our standard ODT Task Sequence in SCCM 2012, so please, do NOT come tell me this is caused by malware...

We're having the same problem. Its random, 5% of our users, random on different shares.   Only .xlsx files.   Microsoft Office 2013 Pro Plus.  Virus scan comes up clean.
