Excel 2013 very slow response

Hi All,

Greetings!!!

Recently my client just migrated Microsoft office 2003 to 2013.

Now I had facing one of the excel.xlsx file was having slow response issue, estimate 2 second per-action, example when I typing, copy paste, move by pressing left right up down button or using mouse to click and point rows column highlight and so forth.

Of cause the file size is about 2.8mb, column reach to HW, row reach to 64 and the file is store at the local C drive, there is not share file.

And I tried to install back excel 2003 or use excel 2010 to manage the same excel.xlsx file,  purely working fine.

Please advice.

Regards

Since this xlsx file works fine in excel 2010 and excel 2003.
I think it is worthwhile to have a try to disable hardware graphics acceleration
Click File in the ribbon->Options->Advanced->Find the heading called Display->check mark the option  :Disable hardware graphics acceleration .

Hi Wind Zhang

Finally I can get back to my customer and tried to follow your solution to check on the excel file.

Unluckily, solution that you provide is doesn't give any help on the issue...

Got any solution again?

I am having this same issue as well with Excel 2013 ONLY.  All the suggestions in various forums, TechNet, etc. do not improve performance.

1. Already have "Disabled hardware graphics acceleration" - No improvement

2. Already have unchecked/deselected "Animate controls and element inside windows" inside of Win 7 Performance Options - No improvement

Searched the Internet and found no other suggestions.

Please help!

Having the same issue. I'm using a custom XLSM 2010 workbook that contains custom functions inside Excel 2013. When I copy ANY cell and then paste it, it takes roughly 40-50 seconds to paste. It could be a simple cell containing only 1 number or text without any formulas or styling. Doesn't matter if I'm copying hundreds of cells with formulas or 1 plain text cell, it still takes 40-50 seconds... Really frustrating.

I had to upgrade to 2013 when my work gave me a new work laptop. I'm also on windows 8.1

Hi!

You could try one or all of this steps:

In order to troubleshoot the issue related to Excel and Word, try the steps below:

Step 1:

If you have any graphic card on the computer, try to update the drivers by visiting the respective website or by contacting the vendor and check if it helps fix the issue.

Step 2:

If the above step fails  to fix the issue, then try opening and working with the program in safe mode and check if the issue occurs:

         Hold Windows key + R.

Copy and paste, or type the following command in the Open box, and then press Enter:

WinWord /safe

Note: There is space between WinWord and /

For Excel: Excel /safe

If Word and Excel works fine in safe mode, try to disable the add-ins associated with the programs and then check the result:

Click on File menu, Options and then Add-ins.

Click on Go button besides Manage: Com-in Add.

Check if there are add-ins listed, clear the checkbox to disable them.

         Click OK.

Open the applications to check if the issue occurs.

Step 3:

If you still face the issue, try to disable the hardware acceleration for Word and Excel:

Open the Word and Excel program. (one by one)

  • Click on fileOptions.
  • Go to the Advanced tab.
  • Under the Display section, uncheck the box for 'Disable hardware graphics acceleration'.
  • Click ok.

Step 4 (probably the solution):

Try to change the default printer and check if the issue persists. If it work fine after changing the printer then you need to update the printer driver, or contact your printer manufacturer to uninstall and reinstall the printer driver as there might be some corruption in the printer driver.

Note: You may use Microsoft XPS Document Writer as default.

Type ''change default printer'' in Google to find out how to change your default printer.

Hope this helps!

When I set the priority of EXCEL to "High" from the Task manager-->Process Tab, Excel started working normally. Does it harm the system or its nothing wrong to set it to "High" priority.

I also have attempted all of the suggestions provided above with no improvement in performance. I have been routinely working with these large spreadsheets in previous versions of Excel for several years with no latency issues. This is a critical flaw that has to be resolved as it greatly reduces productivity. I am going to have to try to re-install a previous version of the software until then. I will continue to monitor for any other suggestions. Thanks to all for the suggestions.

Same thing here. I notice it the most when trying to copy and paste a cells from one sheet to another. Ridiculously SLOW!! I might as well be using a Windows 95 machine.

Got the same issue but with excel 2010, tried every possible solutions and didn't work. In safe mode it is working fine but not in normal mode. All add-ins were unchecked, video drivers updated, but still problem exists. I am surprised that no answer from Microsoft to address this problem still!
