Excel found unreadable content...

I have a user that currently has Excel 2010 on his machine. When he receives this .XLS file sent from a different user who has Excel 2007 on their machine he gets the "Excel found unreadable content in "Invoice Register.xls". Do you want to recover the contents of the workbook? If you trust the source of this workbook, click Yes.

Why is this message popping up just for this user? We have other users that get sent this spreadsheet who have office 2010 (like myself) and I do not get the message. Just this specific user gets this message. The user who is getting the Excel error is using a Windows 7 32bit machine. Like stated before, multiple other 32bit Windows 7 users are not experiencing this issue.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated!

Hi,

Based on the error message, please try the methods below and check if they are helpful.

Method one:

Find file in Windows Explorer, right-click on the file, select Properties and at the bottom there's an area called Security, click on Unblock.

Method Two:

Install the Visual Basic component in Office 2010.

Control Panel > Programs > select Microsoft Office 2010 and click on Change > Add or Remove Programs > at the bottom of the list click on the plus next to Office Shared Features > select Visual Basic for Applications > I right clicked and chose Run from My computer > Continue. Reboot when it has finished.

Method Three:

  • Open the file in Excel
  • Go to File: Save
  • Change the Save As type to Web Page (.html), save and close the file
  • Open the .html file in Excel
  • Save the file as a .xls (with a new name so the original isn't lost)
