As mentioned on a youtube video tutorial (watch?v=gz2N7S6pgks), I want to use excel 2013 power view but got this error;

Error HRESULT E_FAIL has been returned from a call to a COM component.

The E_FAIL code means the error is unknown!

Dear Greta, I have the same problem when working with PowerPivot.
I'm designing a chart, adding the first bar diagram, no problem, adding the second bar diagram, and when I hover the pointer over it, everything disappears.

After that when I click on PowerView icon, error.

If I restart Excel the PowerView, PowerPivot, PowerQuery tabs are gone. Going to Option, COM components, those are checked. After unchecking, OK, checking, OK, those are coming back.

I'm using Windows 7 32 bit and Office 2013 ProPlus 32 bit.

I suppose the problem is with the 32 bit version, I don't have it in the 64 bit version.

Let me know if you now about any patch which can solve this.

I have the latest updates installed of course.

The issue is really persistent.

Hi, I have the same error.
The error began from last week (December 15 th approximately).
When I updated Power View from Excel 2013, the dashboard is updated well.
But, when I clicked on the some chart, the dashboard disappears!.
Some suggestion to fix it?

I created a table, then another table which I converted to a graph. Everytime I try to slice the first table from the graph, the power view sheet turns into blank and the error message appears.

I tried 32 and 64 bit versions and I had the same problem. I reinstalled office 365 several times, cleaned the registry, etc... Anything worked.

I had the same issue after the December Office update. Change the regional settings to one which uses dot as decimal separator

Hi,

same issue here. Office Pro Plus 2013 , Windows 8.1, all 64Bit with latest updates. Table with external data loaded. When I create power view and make Line graph. Everytime i click on any line in graph -> white screen and error.

I've changed decimal separator from "," to ".", tested and it seems ok so far.

But please provide some fix. I really don't want to change our users regional settings...

Did you reboot the computer after the change in regional settings?

Hello!

The fix has been installed on our corporate machines, but the error persists.

This problem renders PowerView practically unusable. It is a real shame as I just completed MCSE certification on Business Intelligence and wanted to roll out the latest functionalities to our reporting environment.

The setup is Win7, Excel 32-bit (yes, installed the correct fix)
