Exchange-Backup-TRICK
Dear All,
I have here one of my client have , 3 servers as following :-
1- Domain controller , with windows server 2003 Enterprise edition. (This domain controller have {DNS, DHCP}). The server name is (DC1.SAMOCP.NET) .
2- One Exchange Server, Standard Edition 2003. the server name is ( XCH.SAMOCP.NET ) .
3- Backup domain controller, with windows server 2003. (DC2.SAMOCP.NET).
4- 50 users are under the domain.
Now, due to some maintenance work will be done on the exchange server, I want to completely format the server and start from step 0 to install exchange server from beginning .
Now, the situation here in my company, as following:-
1- I have here a total of 50 users with windows XP pro.
2- All of the 50 users are under the domain.
3- I have 40 users exactly are configured with the OUTLOOK 2003 profile with the exchange server account & the Emails are delivered to the Personal folder on the user PC instead of keeping the E-mails on the server.
4- I have only 10 users are configured with OUTLOOK 2003 profile with the exchange server account but all the Emails for the 10 users are kept on the server.
FOR your information, there is No any INTERNET Connection at all & all the Emails are running internally without internet connection & they are only using it FOR INTERNAL Communication between the departments only & according to the company policy, there is no any Internet at all & they donot want to receive any INTERNET EMAILS AT ALL OR EVEN SEND INTERNET EMAILS .
Now, exactly, before I shutdown the exchange server & start format it, I want completely to do the following :-
A. For the 10 users whose there emails are still on the server, what can I do exactly to extract the Emails from the server DATA-BASE to the Personal or to have it as backup for me ?
B. for the 40 users, exactly, what should I do to make sure they will not lose there e-mails because the exchange server is not working ?
C. for the ACTIVE Directory, how to make sure to completely delete all the things & all the objects exactly which has been created from using the command of forestprep & domain Prep & install exchange server it self ? I want to know how to delete all theses objects & to start from the beginning with the Active Directory preparation . can you pleaser guide me to do it ?
for your information, the Administrator group is the default one & nothing has been change .
this was the first scenario for that , next, I want to know, how to going another exchange server to the exisiting exchange server & then start the process of move all the users mailbox to another exchange server ?

You could use exmergeand do a 2 step migration by exporting the mailboxes toPST then on the new server importing the PST to the mailboxes, but since its only 10 users I would personally just go around to each workstation and export their mailboxes to a PST on the local PC from within Outlook - this can then be imported again using Outlook once you have rebuilt the Exchange Server and there is no need to configure permissions etc. on the Exchange I/S.

Since they are only using exchange internally and assuming the PST's are stored either on their local workstations or another server on the network (NOT EXCHANGE) then you need to do nothing as email will be unavailable during the rebuild process.

Once you are sure you have exported all email to PST, remove the exchange server from the network, either physically or by formatting it, delete the computer objectin ADUC then run the Exchangesetup.exeor Last appliedService Pack'supdate.exefrom thewith the /removeorg swith on a DC,restart the DC and allow for replication. see kb273478You can now Reinstall the exchange server from the beginning, run the forest and domain preparations and install exchange as per your requirements.

This is fairly simple, install the O/S on the new server, install exchange pre-requisites, run MS Update to apply all the latest patches / updates, join the server to the domain, run domainprep, install exchange, move the information stores / logs if required, apply the latest SP (it is recommended all servers on a network run the same SP level and patches / updates) in ADUC, right click the user account which has the mailbox you want to move, choose Exchange Tasks then Move Mailbox, Select the New server as the location and complete the wizzard. The next time that user opens outlook, the origional exchange server will redirect their profile to the new server automatically- completely transparent to the user.
