Exchange / Outlook user receives winmail.dat file
Hi, we have an interesting variant on the "winmail.dat" problem.
One recipient on our SBS2008 (Exchange 2007, SP3) gets e-mails from another company with a .PDF attachment, but when he
receives them they have a winmail.dat attachment not the PDF.
The sending company are adamant that it is not their problem (I don't know what system they use but assume it is Exchange to) and that no other recipient has this problem.
But I thought that Exchange / Outlook should be able to transfer RFT without any problems.
This user is the only one in the company to get these e-mails so I don't have another user to compare to.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to why this is occurring and whether there is anything that I can do on my server to alleviate the problem?
Thanks in advance.

One place to start is to ask the sender how he addresses your user, and to be sure that his recipient object, like a Contact, doesn't send in plain text format. That is, there's a setting there to always send as plain text, and that might be in the
sender's Outlook.Ed Crowley MVP "There are seldom good technological solutions to behavioral problems."

These mails are sent by an automated system so I don't think that Outlook is involved here.
The sender has already said that we are the only recipient that he has problems with, and is adamant that it is our problem not theirs and have refused to make any changes to their system.
However Exchange should not have problems receiving winmail.dat regardless of the sending format, so are there any settings on *my* server that will affect the incoming mail settings for this user?
I will also try disabling the anti-virus on this user and see if that has a affect.

Hi,
What AV are you using for Exchange? I have the same problem and it is identified to Trend micro.
Thanks,

Hi, all I'm prepared to say at the moment is that it is not Trend.
Thanks for your interest.

I would suspect that the automated system is not forming the message properly, then.Ed Crowley MVP "There are seldom good technological solutions to behavioral problems."
