Exchange 2003: Remove/Backup mailboxes no longer needed
I have an Exchange 2003 server with several mailboxes that belong to disabled users (no longer with the company). I need to save these emails/mailboxes so in the off chance we need to retrieve emails we can do so.
I have about 30 mailboxes I would like to remove and save. I would prefer the simplest way to remove and backup these mailboxes as a batch even if it made it more difficult to retrieve the emails if necessary - there's a very slight chance we will ever need
to look at these again.
The only way I know how to do this is to give myself rights to the mailbox, attach it to my outlook and create a pst from there. I was hoping there was a less involved approach.

Hi,
Exmerge will help you export the mailboxes to PST-files in bulk.
Use the Mailbox Merge Program to extract data from mailboxes on a Microsoft Exchange Server and then merge this data into mailboxes on another Microsoft Exchange Server. The program copies data from the source server into Personal Folders (.PST files)
and then merges the data, in the Personal Folders, into mailboxes on the destination server.
You need full mailbox access to the mailboxes to use Exmerge.Martina Miskovic

Thanks for the info. Can I use exmerge to just extract the mailbox and save the pst elsewhere? I don't want to restore it to another exchange server, I just want to save it to disk/tape.

I agree with Martina that you can use Exmerge to export the mailbox to PST file...but if the mailbox has more data than 2 GB, you are going to corrupt your PST file.
There is a vb script online that has the ability to export a mailbox that is larger than 2 GB. It separates the mailbox into chunks that are 2 GB or less to avoid the corruption problem.
You can read more about the script here: http://theessentialexchange.com/blogs/michael/archive/2009/10/16/exporting-mailboxes-larger-than-2-gb-on-an-exchange-server.aspx
