Exchange 2003 - Exchange 2007 Upgrade
Hello. Recently we upgraded from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007. I found a good guide on this here: http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/Transitioning-Exchange-2000-2003-Exchange-Server-2007-Part1.html I also used a few articles from TechNet to help in the process. I was able to successfully move my services, databases, roles, etc. over to the 2007 server without issue. In fact, everything went like clockwork, until the final two steps. Right now everything is running fine on the 2007 network and working perfectly. The problem I am having is this: First, I cannot uninstall Exchange 2003 from the server it is on. This is not a big issue, but it is causing the server to show up in AD and SCOM as an Exchange server, even though it has for the most part been decomissioned. Every time I try and uninstall it goes to work, then after it looks like it is done it comes back with a notice telling it me failed. There are no services running, but it still is showing up in AD as it is failing on updating the schema as well. Second, I cannot upgrade the EAP. It tells me: 'The recipient policy "Default Policy" with mailbox manager settings cannot be managed by the current version of Exchange' I have tried repeatedly to use this command in EMS: Set-EmailAddressPolicy "Default Policy" -IncludedRecipients AllRecipients But it fails every time with the above error. Anyone have any ideas? I have searched TechNet, books, and Googled the issue with no luck so far. Thanks in advance.

I got the first part sorted, here is what I did to fix the problem: Open Exchange 2003 System Manager, go to the Recipient Policies and right-click on Default Policy, select Property pages, and uncheck Mailbox Manager Settings. I could then do the upgrade of the RUS to EAP. I am now waiting for the EXchange disks - I tried an uninstall again, this time it asked for the CD's - that is a good sign as it didn't ask before!

How to remove the last Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 computer from an organization that also has Exchange Server 2007 servers: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb288905(EXCHG.80).aspx http://www.msexchange.org/articles_tutorials/exchange-server-2007/migration-deployment/removing-last-exchange-2003-server-exchange-2007-part1.html Thanks Your expertise never fails to impress!

Heh - I have been through that guide backwards and forward mate! I have the Exchange bible here and it has almost identical instructions. All of that and still in the end I couldn't get it to uninstall. On a good note, I have everything moved over and its running perfectly. Everything is working, no errors at all. The only issue is Exchange 2003 will not uninstall. It starts, then gives me an X at each thing it is doing and fails with the error message 'An Unknown Error Has Occurred'. It doesn't matter as its an old W2K3 box we are decommissioning as well. I shut the box down three days ago and there have been no adverse effects, so I'm just going to blow it away. Thanks again for your help sure!

I had the same issue recently. If you have the Exchange software on a network share someplace try kicking of the uninstall from there instead of using add/remove programs.
