Exchange 2003 - MTA service stopped
Hi
I have an exch2003 sp2 server that has suddenly stopped MTA service. Tried running the MTAcheck, but keeps coming back with "unable to create MTACheck.Out" folder. in the MTAData folder the administrator has full rights. What do I need to do to get this
working again?

Does it work if you create the MTACHECK.OUT folder (it's a child of
the mtadata folder)?
If the folder isn't there and the MTA service stopped I'll bet there's
other files missing from the mtadata folder.

Hi,
Can you manually start MTA services? The services should run as Local System, the dependencies should be "Microsoft Exchange System Attendant"
Please try to find emsmat.exe from ...\Program Files\Exchsvr\bin and then check the permission.
Administrator should have all the permission except the "Special Permissions".
Besides, please check event log and then post the related error event information here.

Hi,
Thanks for the replies. Rich - tried to creat the folder manually still did not work. I am cross checking now with another exchange server re the MTAdata folder. Xiu - Can confirm emsmta.exe has correct Administrator permissions. Can not manually start
the MTA server, it will start and immediately stop. Confirmed it is set to run as local system and dependencies are System Attendant.
This morning I notice errors 1159 "database error 0xfffffd9a ...accessing 'Public Folder Storage Group\Public Folder store [lonexch1]" with lots of emails in the SMTP que.
