Exchange 2003 - Mixed POP3 and Outlook Exchange Access
We are deploying an Exchange 2003 server and require that clients have access via Outlook 2003 configured for connection to Exchange at the office, and using laptops via POP3 when away from the office. Problem is that once Outlook gets the messages from the server at the office, the messages are no longer available with POP3. Is that a way to configure Exchange or Outlook to retain the messagesso thatthey are accessable via POP3? Something like the "Leave messages on server" feature when outlook is confired to use a POP3 account. I have also noticed that once the Outlook client recieves the message from the Exchange server, the message is no longer available in OWA... Help?

Outlook 2003 client can be configured to leave messages on the pop3 server: Tools > E-mail Accounts > pick View or change existing e-mail accounts and click on Next > select the pop3 account of interest from the list and click on Change > More Settings > go to the Advanced tab > in the Delivery section (bottom of the form) chose the desired option, e.g. check the box Leave a copy of messages on the server. If Outlook removes the messages from the server while in the Office, check how is the delivery configured; it should not be into a PST (personal folder) file - it should be into an Exchange Mailbox. If delivered into a personal folder file, the messages are actually moved from the user's mailbox on the Exchange server into the user's personal folder file on the local machine (e.g. a laptop). As the message is not on the server any more, it cannot be accessed through OWA either. A better alternative could be to use Outlook over http (or even IMAP) access to Exchange server instead of pop3 when out of the office. That way the messages would stay on the server as the main repository, and the laptops would only keep a local sync copy allowing them to work with email when off-line.
