Exchange 2003 Mailbox Move Failure
I have Exchange 2003 SP2 installed on a Active/Passive cluster. I am having issues with moving mailboxes. When I first noticed the mailbox moves were failing I failed the cluster over from Server2 to Server1. At that time I was able to successfully move the mailboxes. A few days later I went to move some more mailboxes but the moves failed with event id 9166 then 1008. It thought it may be a permisson issue but I used the same admin account on the successful mailbox move and the failed mailbox move. I found article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/886700. Method 1 was setup correctly. Method 2 failed with error message 'The information store could not be opened. The logon to the Microsoft Exchange Server computer failed. MAPI 1.0 ID no: 80040111-0286-00000000'. Method 3 starts but gets hung up at the Move Mailbox screen after I have selected the destination mailbox and clicked on next. I can't find the article at the moment but I remember reading about how the account that is being used for the mailbox moves need Send As and Receive As permissons. I checked those permissions for the account I use and it shows Allow and Deny on the permissions. It doesn't look like I can remove the Deny permissions so I don't know if that is by design or not. I have Symantec for Exchange and SEP client on the machine. I have stopped the client service and tried the mailbox move but that did not resolve the issue. At this point I am not sure what else to look at for trubleshooting. I don't want to be flipping the cluster back and forth in order to get mailboxes moved. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Method 2? How are you dong this? Have you installed AD user & computers on a workstation and the exch 2003 managment tools and thne tried to move via ad user and computers? If themove is failing on corrupt items, the up the bad item limit before you do the move. Sukh

Yes, I have ADUC and Exchange 2003 Admin tools on a computer. I tried moving the mailbox in ADUC. The move does not give me any indication that corrupt items are causing the move to fail. It happens on any mailbox I try to move.

is this an issue with all mailboxes you try to move or particular mailboxes? if you create a new mailbox and try to move what happens? See if this applies - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/317338 Alos check all of your event logs to see if any other issue are reported around the same time Run the exchBPA and check for errors Sukh

This is an issue with any mailbox I try to move. I created a new mailbox, tried to move it but the move failed. KB317338 doesn't apply. I have looked at that previously in my troubleshooting steps. I see no other issues in the event logs when I try the mailbox move. BPA doesn't come up with any errors or warnings. If I fail the cluster over which basically resarts the Informaion Store the process will run with no problem. But after a few days the error starts occuring again.

Try to up the logging> ESM>Admin Group>Servers>Server right click>diagnostic logging>ExchangeIS>System>Move-mailbox>Set to Max and then try and see if any additonal errors are logged Sukh

Please verify if you have a size restriction on mailbox. If yes, then please remove the setting and then check the issue again. More related information to share with you: Moving Mailboxes http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa998937(EXCHG.65).aspx

Hi, Please remove the Deny entries for the Receive As and Send As permissions on the Administrator account, Domain Admins group, and the Enterprise Admins group. Please verify if you have Symantec Mail Security 4.x installed. if yes, then please Verify that the account that is used to move the mailbox has the correct permissions. Additionally, make sure that the account is not a member of the SMSMSEADMINS group. Besides, Please try to find the report for move mailbox task and then post here. Systemdrive\Documents and Settings\profilename\My Documents\Exchange Task Wizard Logs Issues that are caused when Symantec Mail Security 4.x for Microsoft Exchange is installed on a server that is running Exchange 2000 Server or Exchange Server 2003 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/909143 Permissions required for mailbox moves http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2006/08/29/3394808.aspx Needing to use Exmerge to move mailboxes and mail from one server to another? http://msmvps.com/blogs/bradley/archive/2004/11/25/20803.aspx Regards, Xiu

When I try to remove the Deny permissons the check does not go away but turns grey with the check still there. I am not sure whats going on. I think the permissions have been reconfigured incorrectly on the Exchange server. The delegation wizard at the Org level shows the domain admin account having Exchange Full Administrator rights and Exchange View Only Administrator (Customized). Is that what it should be? I have SMSMSE 6.5 on the server.

Disable the SMSMSE on both servers and try again. Have you tried to move mailboxes from other way server 2 --> server 1? And you are able to create the mailbox on the destination server? If you have multiple stores on the server, can you move the mailbox between databases? Servers are in the same domain? -- Petri

I can't disable SMSMSE on the production server. The server is on an Active/Passive cluster. Yes, I can create new mailboxes. I have tried moving mailboxes between databasers and still have the same issue. Servers are in the same domain.

well SMSMSE could well be the culprit here, without disabling/removing, I know it's a prod box, but make some time, raise a CR and test. Sukh

Hi, You may try to disable SMSMSE on non-business hour and then check the issue again. Xiu

I am going to disable SMSME during off hours and test the mailbox move. I have SMSMSE 6.5.1.82. It looks like the latest version is 6.5.5.255. I will have to see if we are eligble for the update.

So the problem is also in a server also. Unfortunately we have had troubles with the SMSMSE, but if you would not like to disable it have you tried to update it with latest fixes? Even on one node? -- Petri

I think the profile that I use to log in may be corrupted on the local machine. I am going to delete it and try again.
