Exchange 2003 SMTP queue will not go down/going down very slowly
Hi guys, Sorry this is so long winded, but please bear with me.. OK, so I have exchange 2003 running in a small office with 4 users. someone sent out an email with a 3MB attachment to about 4,000 people on Monday.. By Wednesday it occured that emails that were being sent out by people in the office after the mass mail on Monday were not being received. I have had a look at the exchange queue on Wednesday afternoon (yesterday) and there were still just over 1,000 emails left in the queue. It was the end of the day so I went home expecting the queue to have cleared itself overnight, but when i checked again this morning it was still over 1,000. I have just looked again now (Thursday, late afternoon) and its still at 850. I have had a look on the net at how to clear the queue but it appears that you can only clear the entire queue, not just delete the emails from the mass mail on monday (this is not acceptable). Also it is worrying that the queue has only gone down by 150 in the last 24 hrs. I need to either: a) find a way of filtering the messages in the queue and deleting the remaining ones from the mass mail (they are all from the same sender with the same subject) b) work out why the exchange server has sent so few in the last 24 hrs I have used the Microsoft Exchange Troubleshooting Tool and it has suggested that the SMTP FQDN does not match the servers name, however I do not believe this to be relavent as the server is still sending emails out (albeit very slowly..) Does anyone have any ideas or would be able to point me in the right direction? Please advise if any further info is required, many thanks in advance ash

a) The only way I know to do that is by watching the queues and deleting the messages you want to delete, pretty much one at a time. b) The first place I'd look is at the SMTP protocol logs. If you don't have protocol logging turned up, then you won't see much, but you can turn it on at any time and see things from that point forward.Ed Crowley MVP "There are seldom good technological solutions to behavioral problems."

Ed, Thanks for your input.. a) Yes this is what I have been led to believe - it is not a good solution unfortunatley as there are 800+ queued emails! b) I have just turned logging on, hopefully this may provide more info.. I will post the log on here if there is anything notable on it. If anyone else has any other pointers i would be most grateful, cheers
