Exchange 2003 SP2 hidding distribution groups from user
Hi
I am asked to configure new distribution group called Management in Exchange 2003 SP2. But only owner of the company is supposed to be able to see that group when he types name of the group and only he should be able to send to this group. I know how to
create group add mail addresses to it and how to make sure that only one person can send to that group.
But I dont know how to make sure that nobody else can see that distribution group when they type it in Outlook or Entourage. Nobody else is supposed to see that group except one person and that is the owner.
Is this possible in Exchange 2003 SP2 or I have to wait until we upgrade to Exchange 2010

It is possible kind of but has to be visible for a short period in the GAL.
Create the group as normal, the get the end user to add it to their Address Book (right click on the group and choose Add to Contacts). Then you can populate it with members and hide it from the GAL. The end user will then be able to select it from their
Contacts list and send to it, and not have to worry about making any changes.
Upgrading to Exchange 2010 wouldn't help - it doesn't change anything in this respect.

I tested your method. Not sure if I misunderstand you.
As I understand, it same as users create distribution lists under their “Contacts folder”. The distribution list is stored at client side. Am I correct?

I know a method to hide
Address List from Address Book.
Below is my setups, I have tested it several times.
1. Create an Address list and hide the member of the member, let us name it as “AL1”
Open ESMàRight click “All Address Lists”àNew
“Address List”
Then right click the Address list
àClick “Security”
àAdd users in the list and forbid them from open Address List.
Then the user can only see the address list’s name from Address book, they can’t see the member of the address list.
2. Create another address list, let name it as “AL2”
Then drag AL2 under AL1.
Result:
Nobody can find AL2 from Address Book.

No you are not.
The group exists in AD. It is created in AD, managed in AD. After it appears in the GAL the end user right clicks and adds it to their personal address book. It can then be hidden from the GAL, but the end user can still use the group by selecting it from
their personal contacts list. Changes to the list made in AD are reflected in the group, because it is still an AD object.

I am not really sure what else there is that I can say. You treat the group as you would any other group in AD.

It is an AD group. Therefore the only people who can manage the group are those who can manage any other AD group.
I am not sure how I can make this any more clear. It is a group the same as any other group in the domain - the only difference is that it is hidden, and there is a reference to it in an end user's personal contacts.

i believe simon wanted to state
1. create a group and add required users as members
2. you wound need to work with the user who want to see this group and add that group to contacts
by searching in GAL first.
once that user has added this group to contacts you can hide this group from Global Address list.
i agree with simon and it will work, you may want to create a test group and add yourself as member and test
so that you are comfortable with it the process
