Exchange 2007 Edge Transport Server
If this is not the proper location to post this question, I apologize, I did not see an Exchange Server Forums anywhere, is there one? Can I create/install the Edge Transport server as a virtual server? Does it have to be a physcial machine? I have read some information about having more than one Edge Transport for failover but is that necessary? If the Edge Server must be a physcial machine, I am trying to determine how much hard disk space I need. The server I am considering has 2 processors, 2GB of RAM, 2 NIC cards and 146 GB hard disk? If I must use a physical box would this work? We are a small compand with less than 20 employees. Can the Edge Transport OS be 32 bit or does it need to be x64 like the Exchange Server? Thank you in advance for your time and your replies. MG

If this is not the proper location to post this question, I apologize, I did not see an Exchange Server Forums anywhere, is there one? This forum is appropriate. Can I create/install the Edge Transport server as a virtual server? Yes, but you should refer to Microsoft's statement on virtualization. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc794548(EXCHG.80).aspx Does it have to be a physcial machine? No, but Edge Transport is designed to be located in a DMZ. Do you have a virtual server in your DMZ? I have read some information about having more than one Edge Transport for failover but is that necessary? It's only necessary if you want service to continue in the event of a single server failure. If the Edge Server must be a physcial machine, I am trying to determine how much hard disk space I need. The server I am considering has 2 processors, 2GB of RAM, 2 NIC cards and 146 GB hard disk? I'm guessing that would work. Edge keeps a mirror of your AD, which should be small, and some transient data. If I must use a physical box would this work? Probably, if it can run 64-bit Windows. We are a small compand with less than 20 employees. Can the Edge Transport OS be 32 bit or does it need to be x64 like the Exchange Server? All Exchange roles require 64-bit Windows in a production environment. Thank you in advance for your time and your replies. MG You're welcome.
