Exchange 2007 GAL/OAB issue - migration from Exchange 2003
I am trying to wrap up a migration from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007. My new Exchange 2007 server is working fine, sending and receiving mail, etc., with no problem. However, it appears that my GAL/OAB is not working on the Exchange 2007 server. The client is Outlook 2003, NOT running in cached mode. When I look in the properties of the address book on the client, it shows the location of the GAL as being my old Exchange 2003 server. However, in the Exchange 2007 management console, it shows that the default GAL has been moved to the Exchange 2007 server. It is configured properly to use public folder distribution. When checking the Exchange 2007 public folders, I see that there is an OAB homed on the new server, but it shows as having 0 entries. When I look in the ExchangeOAB folder, there are two subfolders, one of which has 105 items in it and one has 102 items in it. One is dated the day of my initial mailbox migration, and one is dated with the current day and time of the last OAB update (i.e., last night at 4:00 AM).I'm not sure where to go from here. Forcing an update from the management console does nothing, and it has been several days since I re-homed the GAL. Deb

I suggest running a Health Check using the Exchange Best Practices Analyzer.

As I said in my OP, the EMC shows, under Organization Configuration/Mailbox/Offline Address Book that the default offline address list generation server is the Exch2007 server, that this is the default OAB, and that the distribution mechanism is Public Folders. This is all as it should be, to my knowledge. Thanks,Deb

The Health Check shows no problems except that there is no limit set for incoming or outgoing message sizes. This is set this way on purpose. Thanks,Deb

I wasnt asking about that setting. In EMC, under the properties of your mailbox store/Client Settings under the Server Node. What is set for the Offline Address Book? There is a setting for the default public folder and the default offline address book for a mailbox store.get-mailboxdatabase | Fl will also show this look for the value of OfflineAddressBook

Hi, For Online Mode profile, Outlook connects to GC servers directly for Address Book information without using OAB by default. If you right click the Address Book and click Properties, the GC server should be listed as current server. For Cached Mode profile, Outlook connect to local OAB files for Address Book information. If you right click the Global Address List and click Properties, a local file path should be listed for current server. Therefore, please let me know whether you right click the Global Address list and click properties or check other Address List. That setting also points to the new server: Default Public Folder Database is set to: [Exch2007server]\Second Storage Group\Public Folder DatabaseOffline Address Book is set to: Default Offline Address ListDeb

What I am doing to check the address book in Outlook is to go to Tools/Address Book, which opens to the GAL. Then I click Tools/Options and, with the GAL highlighted, click Properties. Now that you've explained that this will be pointing directly to a GC server rather than to the Exchange server, the results make perfect sense. The old Exchange server was a DC and also a GC, so it makes sense that it would be pointing there instead of to the new Exchange 2007 server. Thanks,Deb
