Exchange 2007 MBX server high database latency
Hello,
Since a few weeks we are experiencing some issues with one of our Exchange 2007 SP3 mailbox servers. For about 15 minutes (between 8 and
9 am) all users on that sever will experience really slow outlook performance (trying to retrieve data rpc balloon). This happened two Monday’s in a row, then nothing for two weeks and this Thursday it happened again.
When I checked the performance counters I discovered the following:
-
Around 5 am a lot of memory is available all of a sudden (almost all) and up until 9 am this will decrease to normal levels (no idea if this is
related but thought it was strange)
-
During those 15 min Database Read Avg Latency spikes to 900 ms
-
During those 15 min Database Write Avg Latency spikes to 1500 ms
-
Between 8:20 am and 09:00 am memory page reads per second also spike briefly to 350
Other resource like processor / memory are fine. I would expect to find a similar spike in disk latency for the (SAN) disks that
contain the databases but this isn’t the case.
All databases are on different disks (mount points) but those disks reside on the same SAN. Since the disk latency counters do not spike
I’m reluctant to place the blame with the storage. If it is a resource issue I’d expect to find a performance counter that is maxed out.
We have one other server which is similar to this one (OS, version, disks etc) and we’re not seeing this issue there.
Does anyone have any ideas what could cause this, performance counters I should check, etc?
Many thanks,
Matthijs
