Exchange 2007 Transition and Shared SAN Storage
I'm ugradingExchange 2003 to 07. I'm at the coexistance stage. My 2007 CAS server is up and i'm ready to create my stores. The LUN on my iSCSI SAN that I'm storing my 2003 stores is the same LUN I want to store my 2007 stores on. Can I share the exchange 03 LUN with the07 server and have both stores mounted on the same LUN? This will only be temporary. I'll remove the 03 server after all my mailboxes have been moved to the 07 stores. I hope this makes sense, thanks.

Hi, I dont think there is any problem in shared storage, you can go for it but it will give poor performance while you are in co-existence and generates high disk I/Os specially while moving mailboxes. Additionally RAID-10 is the better solution for performance if disk size is not a matter incase you are running on RAID-5 for Exchange 2003 DB. I am not sure if I understood the information correctly, but it sounds like you have 1 LUN and want to access this LUN from multiple servers at the same time. This is only supported if you are running a failover cluster, otherwise two servers will concurrently access and write data to a single LUN and corrupt the file system.

Correct, I have a LUN for Exchange storage that is currently hosting the 2003 stores.I don't havecapacity to create another LUN for my 2007 stores. There is space available on the LUN for both stores, so I wantto temporarily share it with both exchange servers to complete the upgrade. The servers will be writing to different directories.

I think that J-Hs right. we all know that cluster nodes is active and passive, only one node would has RW access the clustered disk resource, NSFT isnt designed to be visited by two active nodes simultaneously I suggested that you post the question in the Windows Servers Clustering forum, therere experts who might give you the resolution or workaround for this single LUN with multiple clusters situation

I'm not going to cluster my servers. I just want to use the same storage for my mailbox moves. I'm going to try it. Thanks everyone for your input.
