Exchange 2007 VSS backup
I have used Symantec Backup Exec 2010 on Exchange 2007 SP2 CCR Clusters. I had no problem backuping the passive node using VSS and on the tape. For 300 Plus GB it used to take 3 hrs with varify option and the tape was internal Ultrium 3. You can can look
for Ultrium 5 tape drives for faster performance. And I did item level a number of times with no issues. Although sometime you may have to restart the VSS writer service if any issue happens. Where Technology Meets Talent

Hello to all, as written in MS docs, we have Streaming backup and VSS backup methods. VSS is the method that runs on the passive node, not streaming (works just on the passive node). Questions:
1- Its is possible to have a backup agent (from a third party) that backups the data using VSS on the passive node and send it directly to tape (not to disk)? If yes, do you have names for these third party companies and their
products that work this way (Symantec with Netbackup, CA with ArcServe)?
2- If it's possible to use VSS sending data directly to tape, could the backup process stop if there is latency in the process [(tape is slower than disk) I know that VSS has some limits regarding time to complete backup
and if it is passed the operation can stop]?
Best regards, EEOC.

Hi
Volume Shadow Copy Service
Support for Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) was introduced in Exchange Server 2003 and enhanced extensively in exchange 2007. Exchange 2007 Service Pack 2 (SP2) includes a new plug-in that enables you to make Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS)-based
backups of Exchange data using Windows Server Backup in Windows Server 2008. You can use Windows
Server Backup to back up and restore your Exchange 2007 SP2 databases.
If you are a current user of the previous backup feature (Ntbackup.exe), and plan to switch to the new Windows
Server Backup, you might be affected by the following issues and changes
You cannot store backups on tape. (However, support of tape storage drivers is still included in Windows Server
2008). Windows Server Backup supports backing up to external and internal disks, optical and removable media such as DVDs, and remote shared folders.
