Exchange 2007 Version Numbers
Dear All,
I am a little confused as to the answer to this one. I have upgraded all of my Exhange 2007 SP1 servers to SP2 RUP2. I ran a few checks within ADSIEdit and found that even though 2 of my servers are identical with the exactl same version of exchange
the version number are different. The serial number reads Version 8.2 Build 30176.2
Does anyone know why and where I can find information relating to this for the Attribute 'versionNumber' found within ADSIedit
Configuration\services\MS Exchange\Orgname\Admin Groups\Servers\Servername Properties
1912766640
1912766698
Thanks Paul

What roles are installed on those servers?

Hello Paul,
Run the following command at the command line in Microsoft Exchange Management Shell:
get-exchangeserver
Thanks,
Dinesh.

Hi,
Exchange 2007 and forward do not reflect the version number either in the value for AdminDisplayVersion, ExchangeVersion, or at this registry key HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\v8.0\<Role>\ConfiguredVersion
as influenced by roll ups.
You can try to check version of ExSetup.exe in the BIN folder.
Dude, where's my rollup?

I will answer the questions in order...
1. Ed Crowley - Mixture of rolls the only difference is when it comes to the version number of the clustered nodes. We havea 2x node cluster with each node reading 1912766698 and the other non clustered servers with various rolls installed reading 1912766640.
2. Dinesh - Running that command does not display the version number only what is described as the serial nunber for exchange 2007 which is Version 8.2 (Build 30176.2) this seems to map to the AdminDisplayVersion with ADSIEdit.
3. Xiu - For your information the version does not change when a Roll up pack is installed this is untrue and only a major change such as a service pack has an impact. See link below -

Hopefully hear back soon....

What's probably happened was that for certain roles a patch might not overwrite the same files, so you might be seeing slightly different numbers based on that.

Hi Paul,
Yes, when we install rollup on Exchange Server, we cannot find the version changed from admin tools.
"Successful installation of an update rollup should not be ascertained by the version number shown in the admin tools. "
Please check the article from out Exchange Team blog.
Dude, where's my rollup?
http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2010/03/08/454188.aspx
Also please check the original Ananth Ramanathan from the following thread.
Install Rollup 5 issue
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/exchangesoftwareupdate/thread/9f3c9e40-9fca-4e42-971e-cfad53eb5093
Quote from Ananth Ramanathan's reply:
Successful installation of an update rollup should not be ascertained by the version
number shown in the admin tools. The version number displayed by Exchange Management Console or other administrative mechanisms is obtained from the Exchange Server Object in Active Directory. If we update the Exchange Server Object in Active Directory to
show a new version number for every rollup, it would require additional privileges for the account being used to install the rollup. Since many large customers have split level administrative model where the Exchange administrators do not have permissions
to the Active Directory we do not update the Active Directory with an updated version number when the rollup is installed.
Another factor is that the rollup is no different than a Hotfix/Update for other products
from Microsoft. So as an administrator you should do what you usually do for validating that the Hotfix is correctly installed/ In Windows Server 2003, you will need to go to Add//Remove programs in control panel and make sure the “Show Updates”
checkbox is selected at the top. In Windows Server 2008, you will need to go to “View Installed Updates” in the Control Panel.

Xiu,
In response to the reply from Ananth - Why are the version numbers different then?

Hi,
From the reply, I understand that version number will not be updated after you install a rollup for Exchange Server. Product team do not design to update the version number in AD, so from admin tool, we cannot get the updated version number.

Xiu

Xiu,
I guess you are a MS Employee can you find out what the above version numbers are and what they mean in Exchange 2007 please. No one is actually answering the question. It seems the version numbers in ADSI are differnet on a SCC compared to a stand alone
exchange server. All I want to know is why????
Thanks Paul

Hi,
0x720280B0 (or 1912766640 in decimal) represented in binary is 01110010000000101000000010110000. If we break this binary chunk up into 5 pieces, we’ll see the structure we are after:
0111 001000 000010 1 000000010110000
0111 (7) - The first 4 bits represent a number used for comparison against older version number structures. You can ignore this.
001000 (8) – The next 6 bits represent the major version number.
000010 (2) – The next 6 bits represent the minor version number.
1 (1) – This bit is just a flag that you can ignore.
000000010110000 (176) – The last 15 bits is the build number.
So the version number is 08.02.0176
