Exchange 2007 automatically deleting email from Inbox
Hello everybody. This problem has been driving me crazy for the past few days. Here's the situation: Exchange 2007, fresh implementation. No other or older versions of Exchange are running in this enviornment. I have one user that as soon as they receive an email, it will delete/disappear from the Inbox. This happens in both Outlook 2007 and OWA. Even on different machines. There are NO rules set up in Outlook or OWA. I tried deleting the user profile and .ost file. Still happens. I used MfcMapi and did a hard delete of the default rules. Still happens. One of the odd things is that using MfcMapi, when I right click on the Inbox and click on "Open Deleted Contents Table", I can see the missing/deleted emails. But yet, I can watch the email appear in the Inbox and then disappear/delete in a matter of seconds. Has anybody had this happen and/or does anybody have any suggestions? Any help is truly appreciated! Thanks!

Hi, I suggest you attempt the following methods to troubleshoot the issue. 1. Please check whether the messaging records management (MRM) is enabled on the Mailbox 2. Please disable all the Mailbox feature and only have Outlook Web Access enabled to check whether the issue still persists 3. Move the mailbox to another store to check whether thissue still persists. Thanks for your response Mike! To answer your questions: 1. There are not MRM policies in place on this Mailbox. 2.--I'll get back to this. 3.I only have one store. It's a single server install. Unless there is a way to create another store to move it to? Getting back to 2. Here's what I found. This only happens IF the POP3 service is running on the Exchange 2007 server. Which would make sense if I was only connecting to it via POP (which I did for testing). But when I experience this problem, I am connected either via Outlook or OWA and connected directly to the Exchange server (not through POP). I've even tried it on differentmachines (in casethere was anissue with Outlook). Any other suggestions? I appreciate the help!

Another update Mike. Ok, if I disable the POP3 mailbox feature on this mailbox, then email stays in the Inbox like it should. So I don't need to disable the POP3 service on the server. Now knowing that it'snarrowed down to the POP3feature on this one certain mailbox,do you know ofany way to correct it? Thanks again!

Hi, From your description, I understand after disabling the POP3 feature on the problem mailbox, the mails are stayed in the Inbox folder. As you probably already know, after pop3 client downloads emails from Exchange Server, the mails will be automatically deleted from Exchange Server by default. Therefore, the message will disappear from Inbox folder of the specific mailbox. To find out which POP3 client is configured to download message, I suggest you enable POP3 logging for more information: How to Enable Protocol Logging for POP3 and IMAP4 http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa997690(EXCHG.80).aspx You can also increate diagnostic log (msexchangeis\9000 private\logons) to check whether other users logon the problem mailbox: Mike

Thanks for your response Mike! I appreciate it. Yes, you understand the problem correctly. I understand the nature of POP3 and the client deleting the mail from the server. Which, when I use a pop3 client (Outlook Express), it does just that. And that's fine. But the issue isn't with that. It's when I am not using a pop3 client and using Outlook or OWA and connecting directly to Exchange (no pop3 involved). Even happens if I use Outlook or OWA on a different machine. Thanks for the links. I'll check them out and see if they help. I appreciate your assistance with this!

I got it resolved Mike! I owe you a lot of thanks! The log file that you suggested is what helped. Viewing the log file I was able to see that this user was logging into POP at least once a minute. Even when the user's PC was turned off! Well, it was doing this from our Barracuda Spam Filter. There is a setting in this appliance that has to do with POP/IMAP settings. This was a test user that I was using and put the user's credentials in there last week for testing purposes. So, it turns out that it was the appliance that was logging this test user in over and over. Once I removed that, everything is working like it should. I wouldn't have found that without configuring logging like you suggested. Thanks again, you were a HUGE help!!!!
