Exchange 2007 backup or redundancy strategy
have a existing exchange 2007 install in a small company environment ( <100 people). After a little research i read about exchange 2007 db portability. I would like to do a 2nd exchange 2007 server in the organization's environment for a 'backup' incase the original box fails (using a different server name). While doing a typical install on my 2nd box i get an error for the Client Access Role Prerequites 'The nominated Exchange server for offline address book 'Default Offline Address List' has been deleted. Nominate a valid server to restart setup' first, is this good strategy by installing a 2nd server this way? Don't have alot of hardware resources but do have 1 good server to install exchange on.. thanks in advance.. fred

Hi Fred, As per the description it's look like you are trying to achieve High Availability. But the way are doing is not a good idea at all. To achieve HA you can have CCR,SCC or SCR with standalone server. Note: You can't implement CCR and SCC with multiple Role on single server. If you have one hardware which is running Windows Server 2008 than you can go for Virutal with HyperV. Regarding the Error, here is the article to fix it: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa997349(EXCHG.80).aspxGulab | MCITP: Exchange 2010-2007 | Skype: Gulab.Mallah | Blog: www.ExchangeRanger.Blogspot.com

Depends on what you mean by backup. By the sounds of it, if your main server goes down it seems like that you want to 2nd exch server avaliable. (i.e all roles). For you to do this, you will need ideally need more hardware. If working with one. Then your option is to maybe use the Setup /m:RecoverServer switch to recover the failed Exch server when it fails and then restore the data for each type of role. You can also use database portability if you focus just on recovering a mbx database if the mbx datbase fails on the main server. You can't use this PF database. Sukh

Im with the people who suggest you just Google for SCR Standby Continuous Replication. Format the box. Read up on what you need and then implement that. Its far easier and far more reliable than what youve described thus far. The tool is there for you to use, go for it.
