Exchange 2007 mail-enabled contacts - SMTP addresses
Does “local” SMTP address required
for sending to an Exchange contact?
Example:
The Exchange organization’s default authoritative domain is “company.com”.
Do we need to add Joe.Smith@company.com to a contact object in able to send
to Joe.Smith@yahoo.com?

You don't need to add it because it will be added automatically. I believe it has to be there because there has to be an address in the organization's e-mail address policy. If you don't want an address that could be used from the Internet, you
could add an e-mail address policy and accepted domain of company.local and give it one of those addresses instead of the company.com address.Ed Crowley MVP "There are seldom good technological solutions to behavioral problems."

I am just confused about this, because I couldn’t find anywhere a simple yes or no.
Is it necessary to have an internal SMTP address (either added manually or by a policy)?

I believe it is. I don't think routing will work properly without one, but I could be wrong since I've never tested that specific thing. You're welcome to test it and post back here what you find.Ed Crowley MVP "There are seldom good technological solutions to behavioral problems."

Hi,
Once you created the contact in the Exchange server, the Email Address Policy will apply for the contact. The showinaddressbook attribute is present with the Email Address Policy. Then you can get the contact in the corresponding Address Lists.
Thus, the internal address is not necessary but the Email Address Policy Policy is required.
