Exchange 2007 moving to a new server (same name)
Hello all!In a couple weeks, I will be migrating our single Exchange 2007 SP1 on Windows 2003 SP2 R2 to new hardware (same OS) and keeping the same name. The servers are not residing in the same location so we will be placing all of the backup (mailbox store, public folder store, and configuration data) on a 2 TB USB drive and shipping it via Priority Overnight. Doing it over the wire during a dry run took more than 3 days.I've done research on this (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb332343.aspx) which is a great help. I've also found the posting (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/exchangesvrmigration/thread/fe380168-aedc-4388-bb7f-4b708909ef48/) as well as (http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/Recovering-Exchange-2007-Server-RecoverServer-switch.html) and so far I've got the resources I need. I am expected to accomplish this migration and get the server back up in the quickest time possible.I'm not anticipating any issues; we only have 1 mailbox store and 1 very small public folder store; all of the roles are on the same server. However, I still have a couple questions that I'm not able to find the answers to.1) I'd like to seperate the Hub Transport role to its own server. I plan to do this after the new Exch 2007 is up and functional then seperate roles afterwards. (In case things go wrong and I don't have time to set up the Hub server). Unless is it recommended to do it during the setup?2) Since I am keeping the same server name for the new server, I wouldn't have to prepare Active Directory, right? Im not seeing any mention of this on the links I provided but I just want to make sure. Thanks in advance! As the time creeps closer, I may come up with additional questions.

Basically user separates the roles based on their ORG structures no of users and also depends upon the scalability of the ORG. You can still go with all roles on same server. You can always add additional HT later and then remove/Decomm the HT role from existing server. 2. If you are going to run EX2007 SP1 setup then it wont change anything on AD side coz AD was already prepared when you introduced the ex2007 in the Environment. If it is ex2007 sp2 then it prepares AD and upgrades the Schema Version. Vinod |CCNA|MCSE 2003 +Messaging|MCTS|ITIL V3|

1. You will need to rebuild the server with the recover server switch. The only thing is will the AD site change? Also, keep in mind that since this server already exists in AD you'll need to reset the AD computer account when you are in the process of rebuilding the computer with the same name and joining it to the same domain.2. You won't need to prepare AD again since the objects exist. As Vinod said you can always add additional servers later and then remove them from the original server.Keep in mind however that when doing a recover server you will need everything to be identical. Same drive layout i.e. if OS is on C and exchagne is on D the new server will need that same layout etc. Mailbox path, SG path etc.SF - MCITP:EMA, MCTS: MOSS 2007, OCS 2007, Exchange 2007 http://www.scottfeltmann.com/
