Exchange 2007 not indexing email addresses
When I try to search for an email address (internal to the Ex2007 org) in my inbox, Outlook does not return any results when not in cached mode. This breaks the 'find previous conversations' function in Office Communicator. How can I make Exchange index these addresses?

Hi,
I suggest you rebuild the index catalog according to the following article and test the issue again.

Do you mean Exchange should be indexing these addresses already and our index is faulty?

Hi,If you're using cache mode, it will leverage Windows search service to do the job. Exchange Full-text indexing allows your users to perform full-text searches across documents and attachments in messages that are stored in the mailbox database. In Outlook, cached Exchange mode doesn’t use Full-text indexing, only online mode and OWA use it. For more infomation:Understanding Exchange Search http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb232132.aspx
You could also check the issue in OWA and see if it works. Thanks,Elvis

I'm aware that cached mode searches work on the ost cache instead if in the Exchange full-text index. The problem is clearly in the Exchange index as searches for sender email (of an internal email) from OWA or Outlook uncached don't work. Exchange seems to index email addresses from senders outside of our organisation fine, but internal mail sender addresses are not indexed and can't be searched for. Could this be because of the header being completely different for internal mail? Should Exchange by default give results to searches for the senders email address of internal email? This should be very easy to test, I hope someone can check this out.

No, the behavior you described is abnormal. I suggest you rebuild the index catalog according to the following article I provided above and check it again. Thanks,Elvis

I've rebuilt the index for the database in question with rebuildsearchindex.ps1, and am now able to search for internal email addresses as well as external ones. But unfortunately this did not solve the problem which made me aware of this index problem. The 'Find previous conversations' function of Office Communicator 2007 R2 was really what made me ask this question. That function does a search in Outlook within specific message types. This is the search it perfoms in Outlook. (user@domain.com) [Message Class]: (IPM.Note.Microsoft.Conversation OR IPM.Note.Microsoft.Conversation.Voice OR IPM.Note.Microsoft.Missed OR IPM.Note.Microsoft.Missed.Voice OR IPM.Note.Microsoft.Voicemail) And the result is always No matches found However when using cached mode, the search returns results.

I just discovered that a warning appears in the eventlog on the mailbox server whenever I perform such a search. I've tried moving the mailbox to other mailstores and even other mailbox servers, but I always get no hits and a 1025 warning in the eventlog like the ones below: An error occurred on database "BusinessSTG101\BusinessMailstore101". Function name or description of problem: Content Indexing received an unusual and unexpect error code from MSSearch Error: 0x80041606 An error occurred on database "BusinessSTG103\BusinessMailstore103". Function name or description of problem: Content Indexing received an unusual and unexpect error code from MSSearch Error: 0x80070057 An error occurred on database "BusinessSTG204\BusinessMailstore204". Function name or description of problem: Content Indexing received an unusual and unexpect error code from MSSearch Error: 0x80070057 Isinteg -fix -test alltests gives no errors/warnings/fixes on these db's What could be the problem?

Finding email addresses stopped working again as well. Whenever I perform such a search, the same warning appears in the eventlog of the mailbox server: An error occurred on database "BusinessSTG101\BusinessMailstore101".
